Hello there! hot hot hot! did I mention it was hot? Wow! I had a good time, in spite of it being over a hunnert degrees, out. I am pretty acclimated to it right now, though. I ride around with the windows down instead of AC and get some strange looks from folks I pull up to who are tucked away in their climatized bio-spheres with hydration devices, super dark, UV tinted glass, and listening to cool music to beat the heat.
Sandstone mtn is exactly across from the volcano cinder cone that I hiked up to last weekend. I started hiking up into the mtn/hill when I noticed the sheriff's truck hovering around my truck, below. I scurried back down and he took off to make a loop around the redrock. This is a hugely monitored desert tortoise area. I waited for him to come back around. We talked and he made sure I had enough water, cause it's over a hunnert! He laughed at my two trek poles. He probably thought I had murdered the other hiker and carried their pole out with me. He left and I went back up for about 4 hours, hiking in the sanstone. Pretty stuff. I have one more little section to explore and I will be finito with this area to explore.
I noticed, as he left, a fresh M&M wrapper on the ground. sheesh! If I had dropped that, I would be looking at a fine. Oh well... UP UP UP I went, with 3 litres of my gatorade mixture. It was pretty cool looking over the river, back at where I was last weekend. This wasn't the prettiest place. But, it was worth seeing and scrambling upon. A great rock hounder's paradise. Lots of swirled sandstone in pockets. Lizards, darting from shaded respite to another, darted at my feet. A covey of quail were setting in a shady alcove, watching me pass. They squealed and scurried; finally taking flight as a last option. Two large buzzards roosted on the shady side of the hillside, high up on the rocks. Even they shunned the sun. I laughed and started a little mind game to make sure I wasn't becoming disoriented. There are so many stories of folks becoming faint, weak and disoriented. But, what if I was so disoriented, that I "thought" I had successfully passed my supposed test. hehe Having now passed my test for the test of disorienteering, I was at the river overlook. The mtn petered out and there was some steep stuff to scramble around. Not knowing what to expect, I chickened out and went all the way, long way back around to where I know I can go. I had to be 3/4 of the way around this durn thing. But, they just found a dead man wandering around out here from Vegas. So, enough is enough. I will be heading up to Cedar Mtn for a full day and end it up in Zion next Friday. I was going to go the other weekend, but there were no wildflowers, yet. Can't wait to get up into the 10,000 ft country. Huff and puff. I don't take to well to the hight altitude. And, of course, no matter where I go in the valley, I need to spot Mollie's Nipple. hehe Then, off to a little market to eat some watermelon!! yesh!

Hello Jerry, love your description of those refrigerated dudes and this shot. So funny. And great desert shots and TR as always. I was going the opposite way, having to get acclimatized to the cold chill winds outside the office in the high mountains south of Tumbler Ridge''' catching good hikes in bunches in lucky to get sunshine at times.

Geez, Jerry, are you sure you shouldn't bundle up a bit more? You're lookng a little chilly in that one shot.
If I were in your place, I'd probably just resign myself to hiking the Narrows every weekend. Or maybe a wetsuit-less Imlay/Kolob a few times. |

Thanks, Karvitk! We're in the hot days, now... heading up to Cedar Breaks to hike tomorrow. Doing a huge huge honey do list today. yeeouch! But, I've got a surprise picnic planned for my wife this afternoon. now, to just find some shade hehe
Hi, Spunky! Even the sand fleas were sunburnt! wow! Going to be 110 degrees tomorrow. But, I'm going up to 10,000 ft to escape with my cheapo inflatable kayak that I got at a buyout store. It might take two life jackets one for the kayak/kid raft and one for me
Hi, Telkwa! Great to hear from you! What a fun fun summer, so far! And....not one feral dog incident!
Thanks, Oriana! I've been hooked on these seedless tiny clementine oranges! Can't get enough. Started eating a lot more fruit. Going to do some hiking at Cathedral rocks in Kyle Canyon north of Vegas, soon. Then, hike up to red mtn to watch the city lights come on at my feet.
Cheers! jerry |

Hi, TMC! Ahhh a cool slot canyon...that's the ticket!! I wanna go back up from the bottom in Ashdown Gorge! But no takers at work. Instead, I got an idea about a walking around town tour that reads a selected book on that day of the walk. We would have a volunteer read the first chapter at the beginning meeting place. Then, walk to another point of interest. There, we would have someone read the next chapter. on to the next stop, snack, read most of the rest of the book, and hike/walk to the final stop and read the ending. sort of a walking/reading hike? hmmmmm wife thinks it sounds goofy. But, consider the source... hehe
I still got a big date with willis creek in the staircase! Just so hard to do it all.
Cheers! |
