The day following the first two hikes, I walked west from town to hike and walk Tumbler Point and the plateau which overlooks Flatbed creek to the south, and Murray River to the North. Great trail, mostly flat with lots of pretty white aspen. Trail offers great views as much of is at the edge of an escarpment overlook. This is the site of a major bird sanctuary.

...
On the way back to town, the remains of someone's ancient tree house..

Highway looking southwest, this is where I walked down to the bridge by the Lions Campground, before going under the bridge heading east along flatbed creek about 3 km east to view the flatbed falls. Check out the neat picnic shelter.
...
Then this young man wandered back from the other side, I thought he might get knocked off his feet, but he made it back.across to the near side.

..some shots of the Flatbed Falls.
..

last shot..a beaver dam.
.. but porous no water backed up behind..

Then boring walk back to town, 3 km to the apartment.

For the weekend with all the road walking inbetween the 4 trails and attractions, probably walked 30 to 40 km.

The Murray River looks like a nice canoeing river in that area.
Do they rent canoes around there. Might be a nice and interesting canoe trip for a few KMs.

In your other report the bug infested dying trees remind me of years ago when we were choppered in the area around where Tumble Ridge is today to fight forest fire.
The trees left after we got the fire out were scorched. There was no Tumbler Ridge at that time.
Sounds like you ran out of trails around town already. Have to make new ones now.

Nice one Karl, good to see some reports from that neck of the woods while you're in the area.
Nice views up there.

Gotta love a hike that has signs like this:

The Murray is a great canoe. Dan used to rent canoes, but he's been trying to sell them off. If you really like, I can try and contact him. Or if you don't have too big a group, I could probably collect a bunch (I have one, sister has two, etc.) It is one day from Kinuseo Falls to the town, two if you want to take your time. Nothing more than class II. From Town to the confluence with the Pine is another day and a half or so.

There are lots of random trails around town. From the top of the little hill up flatbed falls, turning right takes you along the creek down to the Lions Campsite. From there, another two or three trails climbs steeply back into town, connecting with the trail to TR point. There's another day's worth of hiking.

From TR Point, there's a trail that leads out to the golf course. At the golf course are the Wolverine Nordic Trails out to Lost Haven cabin. And then there are all the random trails around town. No, Karl has a few more hikes to go before he's exploited all the foot-accessible hiking from TR. Maybe done all the interesting ones, but certainly not all the trails....

I love how these are considered exotic enough for trip reports. I try and get out and ride my bike at least three or four times a week, usually along these trails....

Wow Karl, you've sure been busy up there! When you coming back home? I didn't realize you'd be gone so long. I'm loving your reports!

Murray is a great canoe trip, as is the Piney it flows into, but be careful about local rentals. We tried this one time and the canoes we got were not "as advertised".

Today, after heavy rains yesterday, last night and part of today, the falls were a lot bigger and muddy.

Here are some shots from late this afternoon.

..

Two videos showing the flow, and the # of trees and logs getting swept over the falls... perhaps at a rate of 30 pieces a minute.

1. View from across the top.

2. View from below looking towards.

I am not able to view videos off the youtube, can someone view these and let me know if they are viewable. I can only view them directly off the camera this time.

A few shots from near the bridge by Lions Campground.

Thanks, K

Today, Jul.20/09 after work checked out Flatbed Falls. Water volume was at only 5% of the flow I saw back on the July 7 flood. Here are photos of the waterfall, and 3 rock slabs showing fossils: twigs & leaves; 2 barnacle shells; and fossilized piece of beack showing ripply sandstone.

Just wanted to thank gamos and karl for these gorgeous shots from Tumbler Ridge. So nice to see something different. This place looks like opportunity after opportunity for alpine ridge walks and bike trails
