Hi DW2... I would not do Annapurna..it really depends on what you are looking for. I don't like hordes of trekkers ..especially in this day of popularity in that region. I didn' t like the roads at all. I would fly from Jomsom straight out..Not worth the high winds and dust..many jeeps pass..especially in that season, it will be super busy. It has become normal to take a jeep or to fly the Jomsom side. Many guesthouses are being extinct due to the low tourist rates due to the road. They are planning on building another trail..but not sure when that will happen. So really it depends on what you are looking for. If you are want to get into that region, than Santuary is the best bet. Beautiful and still real.
I still prefer the Gokyo/Renjo La pass region (Everest area) Basecamp was way too busy, too many hordes once again, Gokyo is just as beautiful and way quieter. And if you really want to do Everest basecamp you can cross the Cho Lo pass and head to Everest area..that is worthwhile.
Langtang is much less touristed..I like that..much worth doing, the mtns are not as majestic as the everest region though...nothing to me compared to Gokyo..that place was surreal.
Have fun!! :) |

| Thanks for the quick response, Oriana. We will be going up into Gokyo and over Cho La, and only heading into the base camp area as a friend wants to head that way. Your perspective on Annapurna is appreciated. |

If you are going to go up to base camp plan the time to also include Kongma la. It leaves by the tea houses in Lobouche and you stay in Chukung or descend down a bit lower. It a stunning pass and not travelled much at all. Easy in terms of a good path whereas Cho la has some boulder clammering. The view from the top and descent down into Chukkung is spectacular. Awesome showers at Dingbouche if you travel down lower than Chukkung. |

I was thinking about heading over there in mid October/November 2009 on my own. Was going to try EBC from Lukla and then AC or ABC over 35 days total. I'm a fit hiker, but it'll be my first time in the region.
Been looking into hiring a local guide, but the advice I've been getting is simply to show up in KTM, and start walking. The trails are well marked and finding accommodations isn't difficult. However, I'm a single female and I'm not sure how prudent it'd be.
Any advice would be great. Is there a good chance of hooking up with some other trekkers when I get there? |
