June 6.

After a solo trip for some turns up onto Bow Summit area, I took a good look at the upper "pacman couloir" and thought it looked really nice to ski. Being alone and sans crampons or an axe, I decided it would be in my best interest to come back with a partner for this one, plus it was late anyway. It didn't take much convincing to get Jason out.

It had been cold and snowy for the past couple of days. No new snow where we were however, which was fine for our objective. We just needed some warmth to soften things up a bit, as it was rock hard with a good solid freeze over night. The morning was cloudy, cold and windy so we thought we would wait down low off of the ridge, and out of the wind. Nothing to do, might as well build a man eating recliner cave to stay out of the wind.

That got boring quick, so we practiced some self arrest.

After loosing interest in that, and waiting around back in the man eating cave for about 4 hours, we decided to go up to ridge top and wait a while longer up there. ...more waiting and dozing for about another hour.

By this time it was getting on to about 3:00, and it was still cold, windy and cloudy. Didn't look like it was going to get much better, so after much time admiring the scenery, we hesitantly got to business on the rock hard snow.

Didn't get our objective but whatever, it's not going anywhere. That's how she goes.

June 11th

With a good melt freeze cycle over the past few days, it was time to go hit another line.

Sean joined me for this one. We didn't really have a plan, we just got in the car and started driving west, then north. We wrote off Bow Summit since I had just been there twice in the past week, and there was a grizzly close by with 2 little cubs. Best to leave them with their space. I got a few pics, but accidently f'd it up by deleting them later in the day to make more memory card space...d'oh. I was left with one of the poor quality shots, that doesn't show the cubs...they are buried by the brush.

We ended up at Parkers ridge, since I have always wanted to ski the upper section. With the winter snow pack being sketchy up there with constant wind load, might as well hit it now that it's spring.

Took the obvious chute off of the high point in the middle.

The timing turned out to be great as we hit the top when it was prime. Here's some scenics, and some action shots.

It turned out to be a fantastic run in perfect snow. Rather than return to the car right away, we figured that since it was a short walk to the top of the bottom slope area above the Parker ridge pull off, it might be worth going over for a look to see how the snow was holding together over there. If it got sketchy by the time we got there, we could easily work around it to a safer run.

We had to do alot of traversing staying high against the rock through a sketchy snow zone. Once we got far enough over and into deeper snow pack, and after a couple of ski cuts we were sastisfied enough to make a run out of it. Turned out to be icing on the cake bonus turns. Awesome.

Sean and the slope obove the Parker pull out:

Awesome day, fantastic conditions, fun lines. Bear count was 6. One grizz 2 cubs, 1 black one cub, and one lone black. Didn't stop for the black and cub.

Drooling over this line hidden off of Parkers ridge...going to give it a go in the next few days

Cool! Is that just a really thin layer of ice on Peyto that we can see the colour through? Or just bits of breaking up ice?

The line slid out from a cornice fall some time between Thursday and Sunday. Was up for 2 days and got no skiing in due to heavy rain in the a.m. and lows of +10c at 2am. Going to have to wait til next year.
