Johnson Canyon / Margaret Lake - Ghost Country

Finally made it out for the first backpack of the season. Started at camp Chamsall on turnoff after North Ghost Airstip Campsite. Hiking on cutlines made for some mundane hours starting and ending the trip. Tried to fish Margaret but it winterkilled. The shore was lined with nicely sized dead fish, but the water was full of small, recently stocked rainbows. We continued on towards Johnson Canyon after a silty, high water crossing of the Waiporous. After the crossing we were free of the off roaders and the true remoteness of the Ghost finally set in. After navigating the myriad of cutlines up to the Johnson Canyon we followed the drainage to a breathtaking campsite at the base of the prominent Devil's Head. The area's canyon system is stunning and the isolation a beautiful thing...

Flagstaff: Nice to hear from you again! Thank you for sharing your experience in this area. Few post about this area.

Your first photo shows Rachelo's favourite mountain (if I'm not mistaken!). That's a good-sized lake, too, Margaret Lake.

What are the mountains in your "Devil's Head Meadow" photo?

Again, thanks for sharing. I look forward to reading more of your posts.

Very interesting post from a less traveled area. Love seeing the wild horses.

Yep! That's mine. And from a neat different angle that I've never seen!

Is that in the canyon here? Which way did you come in?

I used the north route explained in Gillean Daffern's book.

Grant: I don't think those are named. They are all ridges coming off of Devil's Head to the east. They look, however, to be worthy of a name!

What do you think is the cause of the winter kill? Just such a long cold winter?

ps. Nice to see you're getting out there again Flagstaff!

My guess is that there wasn't enough if any inlet/outlet flow in the lake. The area doesn't look to drain to well. Its a shame it did winterkill, because I heard that fishing there was good.
