the government site says the lower trails are passable. presumably that means without much snow? do guys think there is enough open for a full day of rugged hiking?

Snow? There is very rarely snow in the Walbran. Passable would mean whether or not there is much blow down. Hiking wise you should be okay, I would be worried about the road in.

I was in there 2 summers ago when things were a mess, and it we quite casually made it to Paradise Pools for lunch. But if you want "rugged," then what does it matter that's it "open?"

Don't forget a spare tire or two.
