Hi Kevin,

Welcome to the board.

You have a busy weekend planned if you are going to do a "few" of those hike/scrambles.

This link is to the Kananaskis Trail Reports, which should be somewhat helpful.

http://www.tpr.alberta.ca/parks/kananaskis/trailreport.aspx

Have fun.

6 bears today on 93 north between Louise and Parker ridge. 1 grizzly with 2 little bundles of cute cubness, 1 black with 1 cub, and 1 lone black.

Neighbor was on 93 south today and saw 4 bears, one of which was a silver tipped grizz, close to the Storm Mt. pull off.

trail up to lake agnes tea house is in fine shape, with bits of avoidable ice/snow near the top.

saw a griz on the train tracks just west of lake louise (before BC border) on highway 1.

Does it look passable to the St. Piran summit?

Went up to Bertha Peak in Waterton at 3:30 am today. Still lots of snow around Bertha Lake but it was very supportive and the travel easy. The lake is mostly frozen. The snow has gone all the way to the summit of Bertha Peak except in small bowl with spruce trees. Probably up to 2 meter deep snow there but it was very supportive, and again, the travel was very easy.

Came back to join my friends for a ferry ride to Crypt Lake trailhead. The trail has a few steep snow patches before the tunnel. The section from the tunnel to the lake is covered with slippery snow and requires extra caution. Nothing too serious but you wouldn't want to slip here. The lake is still mostly frozen.

To answer my own question about St. Piran (Thanks mikemoran4), I did St. Piran on Saturday (June 13).

The trail was clear to the Little Beehive, and there were a few big patches of snow on the upper slopes. In places we lost the trail through the snow, but there certainly wasn't as much snow as I was expecting. We came back down via Goat Pass and Lake Agnes (which is still mostly frozen), but there was no snow on the trail over that route.

Mt Bell is completely clear of snow to the summit ridge if you approach from Boom Lake. However, this isn't a particularly fun approach. haha.

Minor snow patches on the ridge that complicate route finding a bit unless you're ok going straight up steep and deep snow.

Did Association Peak Saturday. Yam, CMC Valley, shoulder of Wendell and Association Peak is all snow free and in good condition. Some boggy areas in the valleys but nothing to worry about. Wendell and Old Fort creeks are running with about 2 feet of water.

While you were on Saint Piran, did you get a look at the snow levels on Devil's Thumb?

I just got out of the Tonquin Valley. I was up there for a few days.
Edith Cavell Trail head to Amethyst lake. Muddy sections, some drifts as you approach the lake. The lake has 2/3 rds ice coverage. Very wet along the lake
Surprise point to Chrome Lake. Muddy with some drifts.
Chrome Lake to Arrowhead Lake, lower Eremite is fine but still some good snow drifts as you climb to Arrowhead.
Chrome Lake to Waites-Gibson hut, clear but some snow as you approach the hut.
Verdant Pass clear with some drifts near the top.
All the snow in the valley is going very quickly. All streams are flowing high and fast.
All deadfall has been removed.
I don't know about Maccarib Pass. I didn't do the Alpine club trail from the Astoria Crossing to Chrome Lake, but from previous experience there will be one area with snow near Chrome, but passable.
At the moment the caribou are calving, so there is an astonishing amount of wolf activity in the valley, some griz too
Forgot to mention, the wildflowers are in full bloom
and don't forget the bug spray, they are voracious

The switchbacks to the Big Beehive were snowed in but passable; I don't know where the route up Devil's thumb is. Here are some photos from June 13, 2009:

From St Piran summit:

From Goat Pass:

Lake Agnes:

I believe Fairview is in decent condition because we saw a number of people on Fairview's summit while we sat around on St. Piran.

Mt. Rae headwall from Ptarmigan Cirque to the col is a snow slope. You can gain the scrambly rib if you choose, but it still requires kicking up the snow to get there. Class 2 avy to ground on the Rae glacier, and one larger one across the valley all the way to ground. No freeze over night for the last few nights with rain and over night cloud, and a weak ass breakable crust off the top of the ridge. Be really careful with the timing if heading onto slopes. Same deal with the parkway and Louise. Avalanches are still a concern if you f the timing.

The Celestine Lake road in Jasper is now closed for the season. I wish parks could make up their mind.
On the same note, parks is tendering out, at the moment, repaving of the Edith Cavell Road and plan on closing it down on Sept 7 to all foot, bike and vehicle traffic. So if anyone out there is planning to climb Edith Cavell or do Verdant or Campus Pass do it before Sept 7. If planning a trip into the ACC hut you can still get there via Maccarib, but it'll be a much longer hike.

waterton:

townsite to boundary bay: good condition, no mud.

bertha falls/lake trail: good condition, very little mud.

trail around bertha lake: very snowy and muddy. we didn't continue all the way around. bertha lake campground is under 2ft of snow. lake is mostly free, but a bit of lingering ice.
