SemiAwesome: The mozzies didn`t follow me to the summit. They were already there! In fact, they were all over the mountain. It`s the first time I saw mosquitos so high up. Simply unbelievable!

I went up Roche Miette on July 14. Mosquitoes were horrible. Sprinted with my partner to the saddle just above treeline for breakfast in record time. The climb was great, as was view at the top.

At the top we found more mosquitoes waiting - at the TOP of Roche Miette!! It was unbelievable. Far to hot to scramble. I went through 3 L of water on the scramble and drank another 3-4L when I got back to the car. I will tell you one thing, mosquitoes sure improve the time to do a round trip in Jasper just now.

Hope the mosquito problem in Jasper goes away by August long weekend. Sounds horrible. I have seen those 'Off' brand clip on devices advertised, anybody know if they work or not. I have never liked dousing myself in bug spray but if this product works, then I would appreciate it for sure.

We tried them car camping and they seemed to work ok when set on a picnic table or a lawn chair. I didn't think they worked at all while moving though and wouldn't rely on them when hiking. I'd equate them to a non-smelly, battery operated mosquito coil.

I talked to the Jasper wardens before heading out, and they said that water was flowing over the bridges on the Astoria side of the trail (which is where I was hoping to go). There was also an active rock slide.

We decided to hike on the Berg Lake trail instead, which was great! The mosquitos weren't bad either. When we returned to the car, the mosquitos were horrible.

I love Tonquin Valley -- but later in the season when it dries out would be a better time to go.

I wouldn't mind knowing as well. We're going on the weekend of July 27th 28th 29th. I guess "damaged" could mean a lot of things!

My guess is horses + wet trail = damaged. I sunk up to my knees in quickmud on the way up Maccarib Pass last year, and that was in September.

Jasper Park got slammed by a big storm a couple of nights ago so many trees have come down onto trails. Jacques Lakes trail was also hit hard by landslides

More bad news. The Cavell road is now closed too. From the Jasper Trail Alliance

Aug 10. Madame Cavell just couldn't take it anymore. Sometime in the night, she said bye, bye to the Ghost Glacier. It relinguished its irresolute clutch on the northface of Cavell and plunged with glacier glee straight down . Tons and tons of glacier ice falling from the heavens exploded into the lake sending a tidal wave of displaced water, rock, ice, debris and mud. This unbelievable force consumed, gobbled and covered the Path of the Glacier trail, parking lots and outhouses.

All this is astonishing and incredible. The Cavell Road is closed .

Wow that's crazy! So lucky it happened at night...what are the chances of that? (oh wait...about 50/50...or more 35/65 at this time of year)

There are some before and after pics on the Jasper Trail Alliance page http://www.facebook.com/pages/Jasper-Trail-Alliance/168509399845259

To expand on Lobo's posting about Jasper:

- Utopia Mountain only has a few small patches of snow at present, and they didn't affect the climbing difficulty in any way. The water level in the creek is pretty much ideal for the approach.

- Hawk Mountain was bone dry all the way to its summit yesterday.

If you've been holding off heading to Jasper due to its many misfortunes this summer, now's the time to go. Just about everything's in great shape at present (and the mosquitoes are long gone).

As for the Columbia Icefields area, Wilcox was in great shape while Nigel requires an ice axe and crampons to ascend the final pitch safely. Both Sunwapta and Tangle Ridge looked to have large snow patches beginning at about the 2,700m mark; that shouldn't affect the difficulty of those ascents, but you may want to be wearing gaiters.

Does anyone know whether there is smoke in the Southern Rockies right now? I hate smoke. Blocks my views.

dont know about the south myself, but the rain up here should've taken most of the smoke away for the next couple days at least. just checked the louise webcam and the cam above 7000 feet is showing nice and blue and pretty darn clear of smoke.

Some white capped mountains to the west of Calgary today after last night's system.

It is sometimes difficult to decide where to go in the mountains on a given weekend if clear skies is the goal. I am hoping my choices are not limited to cloud or smoke. Maybe tomorrow the forecast can help me decide.

Not really worth a full report but thought I would post a couple pictures for those interested. We did Pocaterra Ridge on Saturday and Mt Allan on Sunday. Both are still good objectives. Pocaterra Ridge saw a few inches of snow at Highwood Pass and was easily hikable. Mt Allan was snow free until just past Olympic Summit and even then it was in patches. Slope leading up the summit had a few inches of snow mixed with rock. A couple photos...

Attempted to hike into the Bow Hut yesterday. The weather was brutal, with snow at least S1, mostly S2+ with high winds. The route sucks thanks to too little cover for skis and open water, so the boulder fields are horrid.

Super-low vis, but I could hear a constant patter of booming avalanche activity.

A sucker hole let me have a glance at the slope below St. Nick that threatens the base of the headwall to the hut. Oh, yikes! There's a huge slab hanging up there, a combination of snowfall and transported snow.

It turned me around as much as my very slow progress.

Early season winter has hit 2000M and above and it's time to get serious about paying attention to avalanche conditions.
