A blessing from the ski Gods. That's what happened.

I'm all for a long ski season, but I don't want to have to divert my July and August hiking trips due to snowpack and high waters again...

Did the Junction Hill loop on Sunday (from gate closure on Hwy 40 at Highwood House) Very little snow on the route, some old drifts in the north facing trees. Several members of the group found ticks crawling on them which is no surprise, very popular area for sheep. Popular route for hikers too, saw at least five other parties enjoying the mostly sunny day. (photos still in the camera)

Hey there, Clayton. Long time no parley!

When you say that you did the Junction Hill loop, do you mean Junction Mountain (like in Nugara's book)?

No, Junction hill (common confusion) Just a walk up. Did it last year and this year took the Venturer Scout company I help lead. As I haven't downloaded the photos from this year yet - this is last year:

Went up Wasootch Ridge. It's a very nice shoulder season hike. There are still lots of spots with knee-to-crotch deep snow on the ridge. We were glad to find 20 or so church youth campers on the ridge who broke a nice trail for us most of the way. Some post-holing was involved near the end of the trail but it was not bad. We were not the first ones who did the ridge on that day.

The summit of Wasootch Ridge looked fairly intimidating with lots of snow. We turned back shortly before the serious scrambling begins. Did anyone do it in the winter/early season with lots of snow and how did you find it?

The surrounding peaks still look very snowy.

Aylmer Lookout Trail is in perfect condition. There are no "snow patches, wet, muddy and icy sections" as Parks Canada's trail report indicates. TICKS ARE MERCILESS

I haven't spotted a tick yet along the Bow River, or in the Sibbald or Sheep foothills, all of which are pretty solidly dry.

I caught another tick crawling on my neck after a hike up Opal Ridge South. These little vampires like me a lot.

Opal Ridge South is in good condition. Very little snow near the summit. I even didn't bother to don gaiters. Other peaks in the area still look very wintery.

main peak of rundle has snow starting from the dragons back. mostly 6 inches or more of soft new snow over a thin layer of hard snow, sometimes too hard to kick good steps.

makes travel a bit tedious on the upper part.

also ran into a huge grizzly just before the golfcourse on the way down.

no ticks seen there, but i haven't fully gave myself a good rub down yet,so not 100% certain.

The only ones I have are from Opal South looking north. Hope it helps. Keep in mind they were taken a week ago:

A series of current aerial shots, posted May 27, of the Lake Louise Group, Castle Tower and Mount Louis can be found here:

There's lots of snow out there still.

Tonquin Valley: attempted to gain Outpost Lake/Wates-Gibson Hut via Edith Cavell and ACC summer trails May 25/26. Snow pack intermittent until 2km past bridge on ACC summer trail, then solid ground cover. Isothermal conditions by early afternoon led us to turn around at 2pm short of Chrome Lake. Amythest Lakes trail in flood past ACC trail bridge. Probably another 2 weeks for area to be in shape for hiking.
