Nigel/Jonas Pass

Nigel Pass: Good condition with some sections being slightly muddy. No snow. However the big river crossing is high. No way to not get wet unless you have proper gear or take your shoes off.

Jonas Pass:

Good conditions with some muddy sections. No snow. All stream crossing are still walkable. Couple fresh bear droppings but no animals sighted.

Both have brutal amount of mosquitoes, bring plenty of spray.

For those heading around Bow Lake, the lake is high, and the trail is washed out on the North West end of the lake, before the creek. It is possible to scramble up onto the bench (watch for a trail ascending) but we figured it a waste of time and energy, so we cruised through the swampy bits, which are about ankle deep for the most part. A couple of energetic hops and we made the trail again with dry feet, but only because we were wearing big mountaineering boots.

The trail to the Bow Hut is in fine shape otherwise. The largest creek crossing below the final headwall was a snap as there is still snow, but I think it will be gone soon.

We had thought for a minute at the car about wearing trail runners and putting our boots in our packs, but we were glad we didn't do that. The washed out section was enough to warrant boots, but the trail above the second canyon (in the trees) is good, (clear of deadfall) but muddy.

Scrambled up Gusty peak on Sunday.

Very minimal snow on the peak... which is perhaps a bad thing since there's nothing to help consolidate that nasty scree.

All the other scrambles in the area: Chesty, Tower, Galatea, Fortress are definitely do-able right now.

Looking at Sunshine's webcams, they got a skiff of snow overnight.

Northover Ridge:
Most of the snow that fell last week has melted off, except for patches in the trees. The ridge is in fine shape, but there is a huge amount of snow on northover glacier with some monster cornices. TR in the works

Larches are in their prime right now so I took a late trip up Fairview Mtn on Saturday with my wife. We left the summit at 5 pm and by the time we got back into the larches at Saddleback, there wasn't a soul to be seen. With the whole pass to ourselves, I was smiling thinking of how many hundreds of people must have been just one valley over at Sentinel Pass

Mostly knee-deep snow, and in some places snow is up to the crotch, near and above the treeline in the Highwood area, not as bad along the Smith-Dorrien Road as of last Saturday. Pocaterra Ridge Trail is nicely broken by 20 CORA hikers.

Lots of fresh snow on the parkway. About a foot of snow on Bow Summit and 6" at Parkers ridge and a little less at Athabasca Glacier

Recent storm snow, highwinds and rising temperatures has greatly increased the avalanche risk in Banff, Yoho, and Kootenay NP.

Remember to check the avalanche bulletins before heading out!

Just in case anyone is interested, there is about 50 cm of fresh snow at the head of Upper Kananaskis Lake (Point campground) as of yesterday (Jan. 30th). We were breaking trail up to our knees once we hit the rockfall!

Hit Rawson Lake with the hoards on Saturday. Our group was first up in fresh snow, lovely day with more snow steadily falling all day. Had a fun ride down on a crazy carpet although I must say it would seem I need to do some ab work. And of course leaving the trail in spectacular fashion a few times contributed to a few other sore spots. (could it be I'm getting too old for this kind of thing... I hope not!)

One word of caution, we went out to a point at the south side of the lake for lunch and one of our party broke thru the ice into a couple feet of water near the shore. It could be that there was a spring there or something, a large branch was sticking out of the ice at that spot indicating perhaps someone tried to mark its location? I would have thought the ice at that elevation would be safe by now but up until now the weather has been rather mild.

Today saw a significant number of large avalanches including one fatal accident. If you are going into the backcountry this weekend, HEADS UP.

Read the CAC forecasters blog for more information: http://www.avalanche.ca/cac/bulletins/forecaster-blog

We were skiing fairly close to the area of the fatality yesterday. Temperatures in the alpine were cooking and lots of deep slabs were pulling out.

We skied NE aspects this weekend on the south end of the Icefields Parkway, and stability was good. Facets near ground are persistent and widespread, so if something goes, it might go big. We found a small weak layer 30cm down and another 80cm down, but it took a lot to get either to go. Even so, we were wary of any thinner spots and convex rolls, and got up early and down early too. Today (Sunday Feb 5) the temp was -17C at 9:00am as we began skinning up, and by 11:00 at 2450M, it was -4C! We made one fantastic long run and called it a day as I had a long drive home and the dramatic temperature rise had my spidey sense going off a little, even though we were on a NE aspect.

On Saturday we watched a big group skiing Helen Shoulder very late, enjoying the late sun on those upper slopes and the very, very warm day. Eek!
