...take the current date and subtract half a month from the season progress. You got lake and Borg. backwards aswell.

I was out past the Elbow Valley winter gate about a week ago and there still is quite a bit of snow in and amongst the trees.

Take gaiters and you'll have no problem. Most of the route is dry. I was up in 90 minutes. I'd post photos but I'm at the wrong computer.

I took the short (steep) route up and the long (switchbacking) route down. I lost the trail on the way down because it was covered in snow here and there and I purposed to stay off of the snow. Wasn't sure if I was on game trails but I eventually (through regained elevation) got onto the main trail before the point where it splits to give you choice of either steep/gradual ascent.

Two oddities: 1) It took me as long to come down as it took to get up and 2) on the way up I stupidly dropped a Mars Bar wrapper out of a pocket that I forgot to zip up only to find it again on the way down!

Mt Burke was much more of a slog...knee and hip-high snow through the trees. You can follow my tracks but whenever possible, I went off trail to travel the "path of least resistance"...that is to say, wherever there was no snow. So, good luck re-finding my trail once I went out of the snow. On descent, I stayed completely off-trail by traversing the south-facing aspect of Mt Burke through grass, low growth and somewhat sparse trees.

Also, I picked up a tick either on Mt Burke or on Raspberry Ridge. Didn't find out until I felt it crawling on my neck at home.

By the way, the GemTrek map really needs some updating regarding Mt Burke! I'd post a TR but I have no time.

Regards,

Granticulus

Thanks for the detailed report. The longer switchbacking route on Raspberry is hard to stay on in the best of conditions - easier if you access it from much further down the ridge! Burke is on my list too - so thanks for that info!

Skyladder on Mt Andromeda is in great shape. A party on Friday was turned away by lack of overnight freeze. We got a freeze on Friday night and climbed/skied it without issue on Saturday. An enthusiastic snowcoach driver mentioned that us skiing down was a real hit with the tourists out on the glacier.

The bergschrund is not bridged well, and required delicate climbing on the way up, and a rappel/jump on the way down.

It's been snowing quite steadily since last night. Around 1cm on the ground and who knows what at altitude.

What a way to start the IFSC Bouldering World Cup in Canmore.

Live report from the Fryatt trail in Jasper. It's a little drizzly here, but really nice hiking and biking weather. Lots of deadfall on the trail, for now. Working on that

I just took a drive up the smith dorrien/spray lakes road at about 2:30 today and once you get past goat creek parking, there is between 1-2 feet of snow on the road, some spots it seems higher and its still coming down.

My intention was to go as high as I could, but there was too much deadfall on the lower Fryatt. There were too many of these

It's a lot more work when the trees fall along the trail. But it looked like this after. It's a good thing that our trees aren't as big as in B.C.

I think that you could probably get to Brussels camp without hitting too much snow, but the headwall would still be in bad shape.
I'm hiking in to Poboktan Falls tomorrow and that will give me a better idea on where the snow line is

The Geraldine Lakes road is now open. I saw a black bear and two wolves today but i couldn't get pictures

Morraine Lake road open as of Thursday. All trails from Morraine Lake are snowbound. We skinned up on skis from the parking lot. Still a few feet up toward larch valley with isolated bare patches on the trail where sun exposed. Hiking season at Morraine is still a ways off.

Darn! I was hoping to get Rimwall Summit in next week. 1-2 ft of snow from the road does not sound great. I wonder if the upper slopes would be somewhat snow free because of wind and or sun? If so, maybe we could still have success and just trudge through the snow in the trees and take snowshoes or something to use if needed. This seems crazy for almost June.

Jeff, I think by next week it should be okay. It was melting pretty fast today even with the sun behind the clouds.

Saw some people up on Boundary Peak over the weekend which looked alright, the view of Athabasca is probably amazing from up there, snow patches on the way to the top of boundary. A shot of Mt Wilcox and Atha.

Cheers,

Dan
