Does that mean I should bring my skis in at the end of the month to continue my ski season? Or when does the climbing season start? Should I bring both skis and climbing gear in? Hehe.

Climbing season started a month ago Larry!

I've already been up Yamnuska 4 times. Not to mention climbing at Wasootch, Barrier, Grassi Lakes, etc.

That's true.

By the way, I saw your partner Rob at Yam about 3 weeks ago.

Yeah, he's been giving me grief about the amount of time I have been spending skiing this spring. How'd you know we knew each other?

I remembered him from your trip report where he broke his arm. Glad to see he's fully recovered.

I was part of a group of 3 Japanese climbers who asked his group if we could take some pictures of his guidebook. We realized at the trailhead that all 3 of us left our guidebooks at home... assuming the other would have brought it along. Hahaha!

These are all first hand reports as I have done them all. Of course, this could all change with a freakish late season snow storm. We didn't get any of the snow that hit southern Ab last week

Wow, you are an invaluable source of information for Jasper! Thanks a lot for this conditions report! I would appreciate if you could post a brief report after your hike to Glacier Lake. Too bad that Celestial Road is closed. I thought about cycling to Indian Snake Falls sometime this month.

Granticulus - I'm interested but only when we do Compression and Nihani in one day...know a bunch of guys wo did it last year and they went up between the two and bagged both peaks.

wbylsma: When you say that you want to do both Compression and Nihahi, does that mean that you want to do both ridgewalks (about 14km of ridgewalking + 10km of in and out) or does that mean that you want to simply bag Nihahi (summit) and then do Compression Ridge? It sounds like you mean the latter.

I've already done Nihahi Ridge. I don't see why we wouldn't add Nihahi's summit to the day if we're going over to do Compression Ridge (after all, it's right there and it's one that I'd love to do again).

As you probably know, besides the distance, the difference between doing only one of the ridges and doing either just Nihahi or both ridges is the number of vehicles you need. If I'm right about what you're proposing, we only need one vehicle (unless there are too many in the party).

I just love planning the summer...

Hi Engor,
You can ride to Snake Indian Falls from Rock Lake. As far as I'm concerned, it's the more scenic way, although the riding isn't as good as from Celestine. That'll be good to go by the long weekend, although you may run into patches of snow around the lake. The falls aren't quite as spectacular in May as they are in July

Thanks Lobo. I heard that the ride from Rock Lake to the falls is quite challenging, not sure if I would like to take my friends there. Surprising to hear that the falls are more spectacular in July. I guess it's because the snow starts melting really good in late June.
I would prefer to do something more alpine in July. Indian Snake Falls in a good season opener when it's all snowbound higher up.

Diez Vista is clear and in good condition. All windfalls have now been removed.

Sulphur Mtn (Banff) has snow on most of the path for the upper 2/3. The snow is packed down but footing will be better once the snow has cleared. I intended on doing the ridgewalk to the summit yesterday but I didn't feel like wading through the knee-high snow (and possibly deeper in places...I only went maybe 200m past the upper terminal before turning tail). The boardwalk to Sanson Peak is clear of snow, too.

Foley Lake can not be accessed by vehicle. I drove over the small slide by airplane creek, (I did not want to explore a few weeks back) only to drive 200m and see a huge one. Even the BIG Wheeling trucks are not making it past. Foot Access starts from airplane creek now.

I was out hiking at Lake Minnewanka on Saturday.

As expected, the trail is very wet in the open and slippery in the shaded areas. Was surprised to see some mountain bikers hit the trail.

For you rock climbers out there, Wasootch is pretty much in perfect condition now. The small patches of snow which lingered around yesterday afternoon should be gone by today or tomorrow.

ahhem....attention! This thread is in the ALBERTA regional disuccion and if you look closely, you will notice that the conditions reports are mostly in the Canmore, Banff, K-country, and Lake Louise, and Jasper area. Please start a new thread for the coast so as not to clutter this thread.

The skiing is still awesome although we have not had a good solid overnight freeze. It's warming up and breaking the crust down really quickly. Careful with the timing.

Grassi Lakes yesterday was a total shit show. Waaay too many climbers there. I guess all the "alone" time touring has jaded me. Lots of dry routes.

Went up this morning and it's pretty much dry all the way. Still some lingering snow and ice patches for the last couple 100 meters below tree line and more snow from tree line to the top but nothing to worry about. Was very busy up there today but my dad from Holland had a good time.

Smokey river trail from Sulphur Gates to Clarks crossing clear with some muddy sections. The Smokey is muddy but fordable. Lots of snow above tree line.

T2C, how is west Rundle looking? Is the narrow section free of snow yet? I realize that today may not be the best day for viewing, but an assessment before the weekend would be appreciated.

Eco, are you talking about the Banff end of Rundle? And the thin part being the Dragon's Back (which leads to the true summit)? If you are, I can attest that it is currently snowbound. I was up to my knees (in some places up to my thighs) in snow on Sulphur on Saturday and Sulphur is considerably lower than Rundle.

Otherwise, if you're talking about the east end, I cannot vouch for how much snow there is. I don't think that EEOR is an avalanche risk but I could be wrong. I was up there in February but the snow wasn't all that significant.

Did any of this help???

It does so, Grant, thanks. Since the Banff side of Rundle is in shape relatively early (most years), I try to get in the mega grunt in May or June.

It`s been snowing up there all day today, and when vis was good before, it was snowbound.
