Skied S Chute of sub peak Crown Mtn
Ascended 7000 feet
April 4/09

I have been staring at this chute for years from work as I drive in circles around and around. I figured I got to check this out and ski it, as I doubt anyone has. I started with a hike up the BCMC and skinned to the Hanes pass. Surprisingly great powder skiing on the NW slope dropping into Hanes valley on a steep tree run to the valley bottom. From here a very steep skin track up through the trees with warming temperatures. Dropping into two gullies. Finally gaining the w ridge of Crown mtn. From here I went up and down the ridge steep skinning down climbing and boot packing and gained the sub peak of Crown mtn. I had a little lunch of pork tenderloin and potato's and waited for the clouds to clear. It was tough to find the entrance because it started with trees and wasn't obvious.Luckily I could refer to my photo from work I took in the city and this gave me a better vantage point. I dropped in and temps were rising and sloughing snow from trees and rocks. Cloud covered and I dropped in steep and tight skis practically touching the wall every time I turned, I skied through the gully that was narrow at the top and tried to avoid the exposure, finally it opened up. I then traversed and contoured around into Crown creek. Then the brutal skin up to below little goat peak.

All you need with this dish are some pickled beets.

Must be interesting to be skiing down such a narrow section. Probably not something I would like. Mind you I said this about powder snow when I moved here from Quebec so maybe some day I will think the same about this kind of stuff, too?

I don't know too much about it. I recall it was not published cause of watershed legality. Mark G. (biffybee) might know more.

You certainly don't want to mess with watershed security.

Andy, how did the other fork of the gully look? (the one dropping from near the summit.) Cliff bands maybe?

It would have been much better if I had skied
it earlier in the day.As far as the other fork
I was a little wigged out so I wanted to get out
of there quickly, so I missed the opportunity to
look up the other fork.It was also difficult to find
the entrance from the top, it did seem a bit rocky.

Haven't skied it but have scrambled up it and glissaded back down twice about 6 years ago. Nice place; very peaceful, other than the avi setup/bottomless moats/waterfall at the bottom. I've looked pretty hard at the variation that drops in from the east (closer to the summit of Pyramid) but it always looks a bit bluffy for my taste at the bottom.
