I am looking for advice on a multi day route in the Banff, Jasper, or Mount Robson area for next summer. Has anyone completed a 4-7 day hike in the area that they would recommend? Any thoughts are welcome.
Also I think it would be great to start a database for all CTer's outlining longer routes within a day's drive of the Lower Mainland. This could include pretty much the Pacific Northwest; Cathedral Park, Stein Valley, Whistler/Pemberton, Yosemite, Oregon coast, the Rockies etc. I have found finding good information on choosing long routes difficult to find on the internet.

| I can give you some help with Jasper and Mt.Robson hikes. The Tonquin Valley is beautiful and there are a number of day trips from Amethyst Lake to make it a seven day trek. The Brazeau Loop is very nice. Athabasca Pass is a great place if you like solitude, but it's not a loop. Berg and Adolphus Lakes via Miette or Moose Pass is very beautiful. My favourite is Castleguard Meadows/Alexandra River in northern Banff. There are more |

Should be some great stuff in the little Yoho valley - highline trail, twin falls, etc.

Good one with established trails Sunshine to Mt. Assiniboine http://www.clubtread.com/sforum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=23262
Or the opposite way up towards Egypt Lake. http://www.clubtread.com/sforum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=19657
I've gone that route from Sunshine along the Ball Range to hwy 93 but that was before I bothered with trip reports.
More off the beaten path... Michele Lakes area http://www.clubtread.com/sforum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=28093
Those are just a few that I've enjoyed, but then again I can't recall one I wouldn't do again off the top of my head. Skoki was good, Skyline up by Jasper, you shouldn't have too much trouble finding trip reports on the Rockwall...
Generally if you find a trip that interests you just post under the appropriate spot in Regional Discussions and those with experience can comment there. It helps if you can narrow down your choices a bit though. Try the search engine too once you have the name of the trail or general area and while it isn't perfect it should pull up some relevant discussions.

It's hard to give imformation because there are SO MANY trips that fit those qualifications, and are worthy of recommendation. In this case, we can actually help you out more if you give us some more detailed information. For example: About how many kilometres do you want to hike per day in a 4-7 day trip? What are you most into? Do you want to see lakes and waterfalls? flowers? wildlife? get above treeline? How important to you is solitude? What do you like in a trail? Do you prefer unexplored territorry or high-altitude wanderings, or do you want navigable trail and established campsites? Would you like to travel as far as you can in your time, or settle in somewhere to relax and enjoy? Or to bag as many peaks as possible?
If you can answer some of that stuff, we can narrow down all the tons of backpacking possibilities to some useful suggestions for you.
Specifically, I can illustrate for you a couple of those already mentioned Bow Valley Highline Trail - four (easy) days of lakes and passes, many sidetrip options. Gorgeous, but very popular. (Sunshine to Highway 93, as mentioned by Sodbuster) Skoki - incredible alpine area, with a few route options. Can be looped, basecamped, in-and-out, ... Includes ten or so scramble-able peaks. My photos offer only a taste of the lower part. Again, very popular. (north of Lake Louise) Iceline - tons of waterfalls, neat rock, good trail, and a billion people. Very short - no good reason to run a backpack more than three days, but if you're into peaks you can sit in little yoho for a few days tagging them off - or see what you can fit into one day, depending on your preferences. (Yoho, as mentioned by Ryan) |

I can't tell you how many great hikes there are out here. But I can suggest a book that I've found very useful. Its called "don't waste your time in the Canadian Rockies." I can't remember the author at the moment. I'll let you know!

| For me, the ultimate would be the Caribou section of the Great Divide Trail. It may be a bit more than you were looking for at once, but you can break it into sections. Also, instead of one trailhead being Sunset Pass, you can extend the GDT through Michele Lakes via the Owen Creek trailhead which Sodbuster suggested, a spectacular area. |
