Damned if I can remember where this is, but I remember reading somewhere that a town places a large rock in the middle of their lake, and everyone places bets as to when it will finally break through the ice in the spring. Closest receives some cool prize.

We need to have that here - anyone have a good suggestion for a lake and a spare webcam? :P

I remember in Barrie Ontario they put an old car out on the ice and place bets when it will break through.

Now for some reason, that just doesn't surprise me LOL. I do miss having frozen lakes, although the older people say that you used to be able to skate on the lakes here in the winter...I just can't picture it, though this winter does make it easier to imagine!

About 30 years ago, here in Victoria, we could go and skate on Blenkinsop lake. Thinking about it now, we were lucky it did not break, cause there sure were alot of people on it at once
One year we even skated on Shawnigan lake.
One end of it froze thick enough. As we got off it, the ice cracked and sank, exposing very cold water.
That was a close call.

I was recently sent an e-mail of a photo of Long Lake in Nanaimo covered in ice and happy skaters circa 1961 I believe.
