Hi all,
We are planning to canoe the Nahanni River this summer. We are 2 pepole with experience but not looking for somethign difficult.
I just tought abuot cannoieng from Rabitkettle lake to Liard River.
Has anyone done that? Is it true that we can do portages to avoid the class 3 rapids?
We're looking for a trip around 2 weeks all toghether that allows us to canoe, hike, etc.
We are open to other areas but I'm a liitle bit worried about the price...
I'd appeaciate any comment on that.
thanks very much

The first thing to do when planning any trip like this would be to "spell" the rivers name correctly. The second would be to do as I did and look for info on the internet. That being said, here's a pretty good link.

Not a cheap river to take on. Expense of travel, food, accommodation, charter air, rentals, will attack your budget. Great river but serious paddling skills necessary.

Check http://www.yukonbooks.com/shop/customer/product.php?productid=4707&cat=48&page=1 for river guide. Answers to most of your questions.

Cheaper alternative would be some Yukon rivers. Couple in Clubtread community were looking for companions to join them on Teslin River [do search on past articles].

It all depends on the water level. We did that secion in flood (July 1997 - we portaged into and started paddling at the Moose Ponds). You can portage the Figure 8 rapid - the hardest secion of this part of the river at any level (if you are careful approaching it). You have to paddle the canyons immediately below Virginia Falls.

If you want more info, you may email me.
