Looks like a good camera, Sodbuster. Have you seen the new Canon SX10 IS with 10.0 MP and a crazy 20x optical zoom? You lose a few MP (still good though) for big-time zoom.
I currently use a Canon S5 IS and really like it, but it needs replacing soon. I think I'm going to upgrade to this one.

I haven't shopped around much. The creative control including RAW was what was attracting me to the G9/G10. I have an older Canon Rebel which I love but sometimes it's overkill in terms of portability (scrambling or travel photography) and I always have a camera handy for my work so having a second wouldn't hurt.
Our family camera is a little Canon and while I occasionally get a good shot out of it I don't care much to use it. It's small (so very portable) but hard to hold steady and the zoom is tedious to use... Well, if I used it more I'd adapt but the whole idea with that camera is for others to use. |

i hate cameras, they ruin everything, they are incapable of catching high contrast sitations like LAND AND SKY. i like to show people how wonderfull a place was, instead i have to explain,.... well it was really like... Tell me its different now ..ha ha. |

I'm not sure if you've seen some of the exceptional photographs posted on this site be people such as "David and Karen" but I can assure you that they were taken with cameras and need no explanation to capture the beauty of the scene. |

Interesting response… not quite what I was looking for but thanks for sharing.
And moving on please (I’d hate to be the owner of a locked photography thread )

I agree, 100%, i enjoyed their pictures immensely and many others i see here. i sometimes get some too, there are situations where the light balance is just right and the camera nails it, but we all know how lucky those shots are. One would think with all these clever computers they would design a smart camera that could deal with the contrast issue. |

A very good reason, and something I wish the camera I mentioned offered. That's the thing about the economy camera industry; there's always this give-and-take happening... hard to find it all in one $500 camera. |

Well no matter how good the camera is, the ability to make a good image still lies with the photographer. Those stunning images by David and Karen and others don't come along by accident or just snapping the scenery willy-nilly as they scamper about the country-side. If you took the time to study the art (yes it actually is an art) of photography and how landscape photographers get those kinds of shots you'd have a better understanding of what cameras and photographers can do. BTW, there are a number of things that can be done to tame the contrast issue; even high contrast sunny mid-day scenes. |

It depends on what you want in a P&S camera as the LX3 and the G10 are two different cameras for different shooting situations. |

How true. I am a self confessed hack but that doesn't stop me from trying. Shoot away, the film is the right price
A big advantage for me to have a camera like the G9/G10 is just to take advantage of photo opportunities that I wouldn't get with a DSLR. Scrambling or skiing for example. Ever haul out a DSLR in a restaurant? Good luck getting a candid shot. The tradeoff might be quality or dynamic range but hey, look at it as a challenge. Things that are easy loose their appeal fairly quickly for me and getting good shots and keeping the 'gear' managable (so it doesn't become about the gear) for me is a huge challenge.
I've seen some tremendous shots come out of G9's in the hands of others so I know I can't blame the machine in this case. |

Good article. I think this underlines the fact that if all you do is post to the web or print 4x6 you don't need a really expensive camera. And as was stated above the equipment doesn't make the shot.
Apparently the G10 doesn't produce a RAW file that can be processed in Photoshop (unless you do a TIFF conversion that produces a file that will make my current PC fire power groan) Canon has some software to process their 'RAW' images ... anyone use it? Or a different third party software? Unless I'm working with a real special set of shots running more than one piece of software starts to get a bit much, that said if it produces results I like then its worth it. |

| I use Lightroom to process my G9 RAW files. I never tried the supplied Canon software. Anothe route you could go with the RAW files is to convert the RAW's to DNG with Abobe's free DNG converter software. That way you can then process the DNG's in photoshop or photoshop elements. |
