Not much of a hike in itself, but rich in history... http://www.vancouverisland.com/parks/?id=511 http://www.denmanisland.com/denman/denman-island-parks.htm
We had the opportunity to spend 7 glorious days at Fillongley Provincial Park on Denman Island. This was definitely NOT a hiking holiday, but we took the time nonetheless to get acquainted with a feature of this island that we were unaware of until recently. The trail starts near the edge of Beadnell road and the "homestead" shows up as the clearing in the center of this map: http://maps.google.ca/?ie=UTF8&ll=49.543535,-124.760764&spn=0.006084,0.021629&t=h&z=16
- Start of the trail
- Cross the bridge
- a grueling 350m hike with about 6m of vertical gain awaits!
- RIP Mr. Beadnell, and THANK YOU for the wonderful Park!
- When you break out of the woods, this is the sight that meets your eyes...A veritable oasis in the midst of an OLD growth forest.
- The homestead is well-maintained by the Park hosts.
- A centerpiece (but not centrally located) is this HUGE nut tree.
- With places to "hide" within!
- An old fountain
- Macro time again! (getting better!)
- Mrs. Shadow managed to catch me wandering around, enjoying the sights, sounds and smells!
- There are two or three branches of the trail, all bringing you to the same place. This one is the furthest to the north.
- Leads past some spooky old moss-covered derelicts.
On Saturday, a wedding was held on the site of the homestead and being the tourists that we are, we crashed it...just kidding! The weather turned ugly on Friday and it was raining Saturday morning, but the skies opened up that afternoon to give this young lady the wedding she had been dreaming of:
