Fullerton Loop: Sunday July 06, 2008

First 'family' hike!

Fullerton Loop, just about 20km to the southwest of Bragg Creek along route 66 with TH at the Allen Bill Pond, is a great little family outing that has about 200m of elevation gain/loss (it's a loop!) over about 7km. We did it in about 1.5 hours while stopping and stooping to take wildflower photos.

If wildflowers is your thing, then I'd suggest that you give Fullerton Loop a quick visit because it's lush and the flowers are plentiful in abundance and variety right now.

The following are only a few of the flowers that I saw today. I'll post their names when and if I can.

1) 2) 3) 4)

1) lush
2)
3) bluebells
4) arnica

5) 6) 7) 8)

5) Dwarf Dogwood/bunchberry (thanks, Rachelo!)
6) Alberta wild rose
7) Vetch (thanks, Sodbuster!)
8) proud papa and daughter on first hike together (guess who did all the work?)

9) 10) 11) 12)

9) Papa and baby checking out the wildflowers (gotta get'em started out young!!!)
10) Western Wood Lily (thanks, Rachelo!)
11) view to the south
12) common yarrow

13)

13) Parting shot...and, yes, I agree with the sign

Tata for now,

Granticulus

Great photos! And how cute - does she have little tiny sunglasses?
2 - I can't see too clearly. Could it be this:? Which is blue-bur or stickseed (lappula squarrosa)
http://www.botanypictures.com/plantimages/lappula%20squarrosa%2004%20(stekelkruid).jpg
(don't click, paste whole thing into browser - its syntax isn't recognised by the linker.
3 - not fully certain, but looks like a bluebell to me. (mertensia paniculata) (also mertensia, or lungwort)
4 - yep - heart leaved arnica (arnica cordifolia)
5 - dwarf dogwood (cornus canadensis) (also called bunchberry)
10 - western wood lily (lilium philadelphicum)
12 - yep. (achillea millefolium)

Nice! #2 is burrs, (some would say a weed!) #7 looks like some kind of vetch.

noeldodd: Thanx, Noel. You should join us for one of our simple hikes. By the way, my daughter already has hiking boots! It'll only take a few years for her to fit into them, though (gift from a friend).

Rachelo: Thanks for being my research assistant. I only have at least 3-4 wildflower books on the shelf next to me...only I always feel so pressed for time nowadays that if I took any of them off of the shelf, I'd be lost in them for hours, neglecting my family duties... And, yes, those ARE tiny sunglasses that she's wearing!

KARVITK: Thanks! Seeing that many wildflowers was a real treat that I wasn't expecting.

I started a flower page on my website. when i find new flowers, I look them up and figure it out, but then after adding, never have to look again. So if it's a flower I've ever seen and checked, I just take a quick glance at my webpage, and it's a much easier research project than having to search books.

VERY impressive, Rachelo! That's quite a collection of photos. Are they all yours? I tell you, I'd love to have the time to do the same!

Thanks for sharing!

Rachelo, that flower page is not only a great idea, it is wonderful to look at. Nice job!

Granticulus, thanks for sharing this hike in its summer glory. I've only ever hiked this one in winter, what a difference.

They are all mine, collected over the past two summers since I got a digital camera. At first it was through taking a lot of photos, but often it would come out of one hike with a ton (eg. a stroll down heart creek), then a few with one or zero. Now that I've built up a collection, it's only the odd flower I'm stopping to photograph which I have not before seen, or not previously photographed very well. I spent some time over this winter redoing parts of my website and getting stuff like my flowers and fossils organized into pages.
