Phillipp86 and myself headed up to Wedgemount lake this Friday. Trail condition is generally good up untill approximately 1300m. From 1300m to approximately 1500m there is some significant blowdown crossing the trail at various spots to either go around or over. It looks like a crew has made an attempt to do some clearing but there is still a lot to be done. Most of it is downsloping from the chutes above and looks characteristic of large avy debris. Snow is patchy from about 1500m up and there is only about a metre of snow left covering the rockband and slide area below the lake. Surprizingly the snowpack has receeded much more quickly in this area than in the mountains further South including Whistler.
I stopped just short of the top (still getting back into shape)and sent Phil on to take some pictures as it was his first trip up there. The lake is still covered over with some surface water. Weather was reasonable with some cloud and a very light flurrie of snow at the top which Phil Observed. We took snowshoes but they seemed to be of minor benefit on the last pitch to the top where snow coverage was consistant but of minimal depth. It should be all gone pretty soon (I wouldn't say that for whistler BackCountry though). Pictures are coming.
Thanks Phil for joining me.

Here are some pics. I don't have much to add, except that the entire hut area was free of snow. And with regards to the avi debris. Any idea when that might have been?

Phil, Thank you for supplying the great pictures. I would also be interested if anybody knows when those trees came down or observed a previous deposit zone prior to the snow melting off. |

I've never been up there, but I have my eye on it for the summer. The guidebook isn't very helpful about the road to the trailhead though. I'm sure I'll be able to find the turnoff on Highway 99 and make my way to the trailhead proper, but what are those roads themselves like? Paved or gravel (or fireroad)? Lots of potholes or in good shape?
I see the wiki says: "Final logging road requires at least a powerful 2wd. Subarus can make it."
If you can't drive this stretch, how much more does it add on to the trip? |

The road is in excellent shape as Sharon said, pretty well any vehicle can go; no pot holes as of yet and good gravel base. There is a newer outhouse and the Hut is in great shape from what Phil observed. Two good bridges across the creek also.

It's definitely worthwhile if you can get up there Shadee Maybe it would be possible to get a group of people up there this summer.

Hmmmm, I'm sensing a group CT trip in the making I've never been there and it is one of my target areas for this summer. I can go anytime except 1st or 2nd weekend in August. Anyone interested in the weekend of Aug 16-17? Head up Friday evening to set up camp and spend Sat and Sunday exploring and then heading back down Sunday afternoon?
Sorry to derail your thread pmichaels. Nice report and great pics by Phillip. |

I have been only there once, and would like to hike that way again as part of a day hike. Great shots, like the picture of hut.

I went up there in late Feb or early March. It was still under snow the whole way, but I didn't notice any blow down. Granted we lost the trail as we got near the tree line. We did notice some recent signs of avalanche, but to my (inexperienced) eyes they looked relatively small. Must have come down recently. |
