Good grief. What a waste of time looking at this thread. And I agree completely with Jim regarding the foul language -- it's really not necessary. Grow up you guys.

I'm surprised you'd be looking for a permit if your claim of wading 6 hours through isothermic snow to the waist on Twin Lakes trail is accurate - perhaps the Parks Canada staff know something after all.

Well if we had gone to Floe we would have ended up leaving way earlier. Challenge is good and it's exactly what we were looking for Sandy. We were fully expecting a wallow.

I always listen to the advice the park rangers give me. A hiker was killed in Mt. Rainier yesterday and two others had to be rescued by a helicopter after they were caught in a snow blizzard. If a ranger advises me to stay out of an area because of bad weather coming in or any other reason, I stay out. I can always go some place else, or I can just go for an easy stroll with my girlfriend holding hands.

They are not rangers, they are front line office staff. The wardens here actually give you good info and are not condascending clueless pricks like the office staff are.

I agree with what others are saying: foul language is uncalled for here.

Having lived and backpacked in BNP for 20 years I have had the same conversations at the info centre as you. After this had happened a few times I would tell the person up front that I live here and that I'm aware of the conditions before I even gave any details as to where I was going. It works!

Finally. If you don't like it go somewhere else and stop whinning!

I think I will try that next time. Nice last line...it's not exactly "whining". Yeah...I think I will stay but thanks for the offer guy, enjoy G.P.

Hey T2C; it's the same in Jasper when dealing with the folks at the trail head counter. I think they treat everyone they don't recognize or know as a gorb(tourist). I just blow it off, get my pass and go do my hike. It's probably good that they mother everyone as unlike seasoned backpackers, a lot of weekend warriors can easily underestimate the area they are going into. By the time I hit the counter, I know if the trail is open and what condition the Parks office has rated the trail at. There are plenty of things to get pissed about in life, just take that deep breath, get your pass and smile.

T2C, next time just point at your crotch and say "would a guy packing some of this need any advice from you?" and see what kind of reaction you get.

Sure Mel; if treating him like an incompetent backpacker gets him riled, just how do ya think he's gonna react when they make fun of his genitalia?

I was interrogated at the trailhead for Mount Marcy in the Adirondacks. I guess trying to weed out potential rescues. Reluctantly the park official allowed me to get a late start to my uneventful trip.

Issuing false info is seriously brutal. Not sure .. say so!

Not sure if your joking or being an ass so I will say that it's not about having hurt ego, it's about getting WRONG INFORMATION from people that are supposed to be professionals. That and being a condascending ass to people. Like Eco said, if your not sure about some thing then say so.
