so i thought this kyaking might be a fun activity to learn this summer.

i have no idea where to start though. i dont want to just jump out and buy a brand new one and end up hateing it, that would suck,

but is there anyone that has lesssons? mec? certain pools or lakes?

the skill level id like to get to is enough so that i can idealy get across some body of water, chain up the kyak and then go hiking in areas that id otherwise have trouble getting to.

It's spelt Kayak.
Eco marine and Deep Cove do lessons rentals etc.
Try google for 'Kayaking lessons Vancouver' you'll find info on eco-marine and deep cove, among others

Yes and they both do a pass for the season so you can go anytime and as much as you like, and try all sorts of boats and paddles. Deep Cove has more of a selection from stand up paddle boards to surf skis to kayaks....and better paddling in the cove versus the inner granville island area and it is also calmer in deep cove so better for your first season...

I'm interested in this as well, but don't really want to drive into Vancouver...can anyone recommend a valley alternative?

Highly recommend joining SKABC - Sea Kayaking Assoc of BC. There is so much expertise in this 'club', and a lot of teaching weekends, and used to be free workshops once a week at Locarno Beach. For your money, absolutely best way to learn
