Has anyone hiked up the Judges Route lately? I just want to know how long or high I can hike up the trail before I hit the snow. I don't plan on hiking on the snow due to the warm conditions this weekend, but is it worth hiking as far as I can up to the snow? I just want to get familiar with the Judges Route (I've never hiked it) since it will be such a nice weekend.
Thanks.

| Ed, avalanche warning right now. Take a look at another site that Quagger handles for regular Arrowsmith and other reports via http://www.islandhikes.com/phpBB/ |

Yeah, heads up about the avi forecast!
I was up the Judge's route last weekend. There was snow pretty much from the start (not at the parking lot, but along the spur road up to the trailhead). With the warming this weekend, it might be a touch higher, but I would plan on being in snow for pretty much all the route. |

| I hiked up to about 1200-1300 meters on Saturday. There was some snow on the road up to the trailhead, but not too much, and the snow was patchy up the switchbacking path (the one with the multi-colored ribbons)-the ground was mostly visible, but then a little before 1200 meters where the trail markers turn to the orange squares hammered onto the trees, it was ALL snow (soft); From that point, I donned my ice axe and crampons and helmet and harness and started the hike up, but decided to just stop and turn around because I didn't want to chance going up higher and starting any slides. I started hiking late and just wanted to see how high I could get to where it was all snow. I did meet a couple who were on the way down-they stated they made it all the way to the top of Arrowsmith. I'm looking forward to going all the way to the top sometime this summer, but it might be a while before all that snow melts..... |

Hey edb,
You can lighten your pack by leaving the harness and rope at home. The judges route doesn't require it.

| Yeah. But I am training right now, so I need to put a heavy load on my back. |

The Alpine Club had a practice session at the Saddle last Sunday.
We found the road clear of snow, till just before the start of the Saddle. By this coming weekend the road will likely be clear to the gate into the ski park.
The Judges route, facing south, will be melting fast. There will still be snow on the open slopes above tree line and an ice axe is recommended.
Other than some fallen cornice debris, we didn't see any evidence of avalanche activity, new or old. |
