| I plan on flying up to whitehorse, renting a SuckUV, car camping, exploring around. But a good hike would be in order, i'm open on time or destination. I've joined the yukon outdoors club in hope of something with them , but they are still frozen son no schedule yet, or barely any response! |

| There are guided tours to Kluane, so you won't be alone there. I would go to the hostel in Whitehorse, or their website prior, and post your ideas. I wish I could join you... |

| Thanks Jf but i hate guided tours, they are so paranoid about accidents. at this stage i just don't need someone telling me how to hike. |

| Hello mrultralite - I would suggest Kluane or the Tombstones just north of Dawson. Spectacular landscapes. In Kluane you can hike to various glaciers in a few days and the Tombstones, if you get good weather, are some of the most awe-inspiring mountains around. Have fun! |

And don't forget to book at least a day (and night) in or near Dawson City. Diamond-Tooth Gerties is a hoot!

| thanks for the tip about Kluane. i spent 2 summers working up there off the dempster in the 70's, saw most of the Ogilvies to the west ,got over to the wernecke mtns to the east. The tomstone's weren't a park then, funny to read about all the hassels getting in there now. its the big middle part i haven.t seen ,lots of stuff up there ,makes a change from SW b.c. Got thrown out of Gerty's for being drunk and carrying one of the girls offstage [had help]. |

hey mr ultralite... I have a feeling you will get the same feeling from yukon outdoors club as from guided hikes. they are quite regimented. i would suggest north of haines junction in the ruby range. no trails and nice rolling glacially smoothed mnts, with some clambering around if desired. the ruby range would be really lovely in late july or august. |

Any recommended routes in the Kluane area? Slims River? Other long 4-6 day treks? |

There are a couple of hiking guide books specific 1) to Kluane (by Lougheed) 2) to primarily southern Yukon routes called "Hikes and Bikes" put out by the local conservation society (very popular book)and 3) a few guides authored by newcomers or non-residents. Get 'em on-line or better yet, buy them once you get here from Mac's.
Parks Canada does some interesting guided hikes over the summer, worth the few bucks they charge. There are a lot of gr1zzlies around the park but then there are a lot of grizzlies all over the place. And black bears. Be careful but not paranoid. Enjoy yourself.
The real beauty is that you just go wherever you think looks interesting and to hell with tracing everyone else's steps. The possibilities are endless. The outdoors club isn't a bad way to initially find a few folks to go with, lots happens outside the confines of the club.

Hey Bishop, [my apologies to the forum for injecting an off the board conversation] i should have replied to your email; there were ghosts at Lindeman city. and i did have a pleasant time on a certain guided tour , though i'm not sure they would want me back. thanks for the warning about the YOC , i'll see how it goes, maybe are they like the NSH, who like to keep things in order. i'd like to follow your idea about Faro , my kind of thing. |

I'm flying up to Whitehorse from July 19-26 to meet my sister who has a week off between NRA trips. Slims River West to Observation Peak is my (our) destination of choice, so if this happens to resonate with you, please let me know.

| I'm planning to rent a car and drive west, spending around 5 days on either the Slims River or Cottonwood trail, then doing a shorter trip into the Ruby Range. I'm still in the early stages of planning, so I'm fairly flexible yet. It looks like my flight will be the 18th to 27th of July. Feel free to email me through ClubTread to talk specifics. |
