I grew up with dogs, but apart from short trips, until recently hadn't much experience hiking with them. I had a good experience this Sunday with Cooper (Woodsman's dog) at Brew Lake trail. I expect the experience depends largely on the attitude of the owner (excellent, in this case). While I expect there are people of two minds about this, and I am still learning, based on my experience, including at Brew Lake, I posit that if everyone understands upfront that: (i) dogs have the propensity to unearth hornet, wasp or bee nests for the fun of it, then move faster than we can to avoid stings (caveat for Cooper's benefit: there is no direct evidence Cooper disturbed the hornets that stung us all at Brew, though he may have ingested a few in the melee); (ii) dogs always have to be in front, whether going uphill, downhill or sideways, and will shamelessly push through to get there; (iii) dogs have shorter legs than most of us, so boulder fields are out, (v) if you have a dog along, you likely won't see much wildlife (at least the nice kind), (vi) dogs will swim wherever they can, and (vi) dogs need sandals to change into after a weary day too, I think it is delightful to have have them along. As for camping, is there a dog-house shaped tent? A pooch-compatible platypus? Guess I'll find out on the site...
Happy trails. |
