| From what I've managed to gather up about the place there will likely be a crap-ton of snow there in mid-late may ? right ? I'm wondering if this snow is usually pretty compacted and easy to hike over ? or if snow shoes are required. Also are the trails pretty hard to find in the snow ? Thanks everyone ! |

| Yes there will be a crap load of snow in mid-late May, depending on where exactly you are going the depth of the snow will vary, for example last June, there was about a foot at Mt. Washington and about 5ft at Circlet lake. So all the trails will be covered, if you have maps and get clear weather navigation is not too hard as most of the time you are in open meadows and can see heights of land to locate your self on a map. Be very careful of bad weather if you don't know the area very well. As for if you need snow shoes, my experience would say no you don't need them, but they will make things easier by late in the day soft snow. I went up on late April of last year without snow shoes and it was fine in the morning but late in the day the snow got soft and we sunk in 6in or so, tho I think by May you would sink in less. |

There will still be 5 ft of snow everywhere. It should be pretty compact , you wont need snowshoes. And don't count on following any trails they will obviously be covered..
Where are you going anyway?? |

When you say "Forbidden Plateau", what comes in mind, is the old ski area that is called Forbidden Plateau... You must mean the Strathcona Park area, by the Mt. Wash. ski hill? Yes, there will be lots of snow there. It melts away in late June. some trails are still covered in late June and early July. This all depends on the weather that we get now to June. (hot, warm temps. = snow melt) Yes, the snow will be hard in the mornings, but it does warm up by mid morning, and you will start to sink in. You MUST KNOW where you are going and how to get there. Please do not rely on "following other foot prints", because how do you know if they are going in the right direction?, maybe they lost, or wanding around? Maybe take a small pair of snowshoes like the MSR brand.

The pic shows Forbidden plateau. Its usually good hiking and if the snow is real hard its faster than in the summer. all the brush is covered so you can hike straight rather than wind about on a trail. |
