For those who don't know the "New Trail" will be officially open May 10th. It's been a long time coming. The new Wild Coast magazine has an excellent story and map. We are in the process of changing web masters and there will be an update coming soon. We are working with B.C. Parks on the Cape Scott North Coast Trail info package. There is still work to be done and crews are scheduled to have all ready for May 10th. Cheers, Al H Chair N.V.I.T.S.

I've got the free magazine and the map and information is great.
We are hiking the trail in July and have a boat reserved to pick us up at Shushartie Bay at trail's end. Does anyone know who might be doing shutle service into the Cape Scott trailhead for hikers?

Tmac....We are starting that hike at the Cape Scott trailhead about 60 km from Port Hardy. The only map I have so far is the one I got in the free Wildcoast magazine that some hiking stores have. I am hiking into Nels Bight the first day, Cape Scott lighthouse the second day, and then the next four days on north coasat trail. Total distance about 80 km. Then pick up by boat for ride back to Port Hardy.

Looking for quick facts:
Length and duration of a hike on NCT.
Distance of return boat trip.
Location of trail head.

Will there be maps online when the web master switch is done or do I have to pick up a Wild Coast mag?

Thanks all.

Thanks Vic-found a map. I hope there will be some sort of shuttle from Nissen Bight back to Port Hardy if you start at the other end.

A large format map of the North Coast Trail will be available in time for the trail grand opening May 10. It is being produced with the spacial data from the trail builders, Strategic Forest Management, so will feature absolutely accurate information, and will be a fundraiser for the North Vancouver Island Trail Society for trail maintenance and improvements. It will be available for $8 at outdoor stores across Vancouver Island and at numerous places in Port Hardy and Port McNeill, particularly the water taxi operators, the Port Hardy visitors centre, etc. If want a copy mailed you'll be able to order it online at the Wild Coast Magazine website (www.wildcoastmagazine.com)

The Society is trying to find someone who is interested in providing land transport to the western trail head on a scheduled basis for the upcoming season. Currently North Island Transportation 250-949-6300 who have the mail delivery contract to Holberg/Winter Harbour on tuesdays and thursdays are the only option. Contact them directly. The "Official Opening" is scheduled for May 10th. There will be a public reception/presentation at the Seven Hills Golf Club from 4:30-6:30, refreshments will be served.....Cheers Al H

I understand that the logging road to the east (Shushartie Bay) Trailhead has been decommissioned.
Would anyone know much of the road has been decommisioned?
In other words, is possible to drive to close tot he trailhead and then bushwhack/hike in along the remnants of the old road?

Many thanks in advance.

I am curious to know how do one arrange transportation... do you hike from shushartie bay to Cape scott and then back track back to the ferry or do you exit out at San Josef and thumb your way back to Port hardy

depends on how much "fun" you want. I'm planning to do a yoyo trip from San Josef because I'll be solo and don't want to be stuck to a schedule or have to rely on the kindness of strangers but this summer should provide some indication on how the transport situation will develop. Its all about time and money !

I was wondering how are you going to get to the trailhead... car, bus, thumb and etc?? If you are driving to the TH ... how are you going to get back to your car from port hardy?

We are trying to find some kind of shuttle transportation from Port Hardy to the Cape Scott trail head....that is the one thing missing for us so far...we don't want to leave our cars at trailhead for six days.

Have you checked with North Island Taxi 250-949-8800 in Port Hardy to see if they have a van or some other capability for doing a pickup or drop off? I see them listed as a business up there, I would suspect the price won't be cheap but ?
