Can anyone tell me how much money I should budget for tips while trekking in Peru? In Africa the trekking companies suggested $$ per guide, cook etc per day and the total was divided between the group members. I have nothing to go on for tipping in Peru. Any help would be appreciated.

| One CT member has suggested $20 per day for the guide and $10 per day for the cook. |

FOr the Inca Trail, it was recommended to us to make sure that each porter got about a 35 dollar tip at the end. The Cook should get a bit more. What happens realistically is that the money is pooled and the head porter will dole it out - fairly or not, we have no way of knowing.
We didn't actually tip our guides. My husband slipped them a 20 US bill, but to be honest, we weren't that impressed with them. They were encouraging the fast people to go faster than they should have (resulting in the two fastest having to leave the trip early due to altitude sickness). Those of us who went slowly were shouted at continually to "Vamos," even though one of our part of the group was suffering from the altitude and couldn't go any faster. Eventually they kind of gave up on us back of the packers, and my husband looked after us (he wasn't too sad - him plus 5 girls :) They were pompous and lazy and treated the porters crappily. The porters brought a bottle of rum up for us, and the guide drank it all on night one, then had the porters carry all his stuff. He was an archaeologist and knew his stuff, but by the time we got to the good ruins where he had something useful to say, we'd all gotten sick of the sound of his voice! He was incredibly selfish, and usually ate way more than his fill (8 people, 8 chicken breasts, he'd invariably take 2). We think that he thought he was hot stuff with the ladies, and was kind of sad that our group was mostly asian gals. He kept making comments and didn't seem that interested in us as people (other than yours truly, one of the only "white" gals in our group. GRR!) We didn't think he deserved a tip!
Needless to say, you hopefully won't get this guy. SAS travel. Don't even remember his name, and we just got back in May!!!
Happy planning!

| Randomgirl...thanks for the info. We aren't doing the Inca trail, though will be visiting Macchu Picchu. We are trekking the Huayhuash circuit[12days] and Santa Cruz trek out of Huarez, and then Ausangate 6 days] out of Cusco, using Pony's Expeditions, and Liz Explorers. |
