Got a call late this morning asking if I wanted to go paddling on the Fraser from Vedder Canal to Mission -- since I'm always up to a paddle on the Fraser I was on my way. We were off to a late start (got on the water at about 2:00 PM) but figured that we'd be able to get back before it got too dark (we brought headlamps just in case).
We started from the Vedder Canal, just off of Hwy 1 near Chilliwack and paddled a few kilometers before entering into the Fraser.
1. 2. 3.
1. At the put in, Vedder Canal 2. Blue heron 3. Bald Eagle -- we saw lots of these today
4. 5. 6.
4. Train bridge over the Vedder Canal, a short ways from the Fraser 5. Cold looking mountains to the north 6. Ice on log booms
7. 8. 9.
7. Ice on the river (there were some large pieces) 8. Setting sun 9. Westminster Abbey sits high atop the hill as we approach Mission
10.
10. Arriving at the Mission Bridge at dusk

Those are great pictures. How far do you think it is from the barrowtown pump station to the mouth of the vedder? That would make for a nice little quick trip that is not too far from home.

It's just under 5km from the pumphouse to the Fraser River. We did have a bit of current (flowing towards the Fraser) but it wasn't so much that we couldn't have paddled against it.

There were quite a few bald eagles along the way -- I probably saw about 20 of them all total, including this juvenile eagle that was checking me out as I drifted past (it was a bit difficult to get a shot through all the branches -- and it was up about 40-50 feet in a tree):

Really great pictures. I see lots of eagles walking the Fraser River. They are a very beautiful bird. I like your shot of the young eagle. Very cute!

Thanks for all the compliments.
johnbarber, I should mention that the current in the Vedder wasn't bad when we were there -- I have no idea what the current is like at other times, or how much it is effected by the tides.

Have you paddled the Sumas river from the pumphouse up to Abbotsford? Plenty of wildlife along there. I'm hoping to do that paddle later in spring.

I've never paddled that route, but after looking on a map, it looks like it would be a good trip. Where do you take out in Abbotsford?

I have paddled part of the sumas river and it was quite interesting. We launched beside the bridge at: N49 03.725 W122 10.382 and paddled upstream for a while. There were a couple of geocaches along the way that made things a little more interesting. The water in the river when we went was just about the foulest looking stew I have paddled on, so don't go to practice your eskimo rolls! And if you do, keep your mouth shut. |

Hey Dan, I was wondering if it's possible that the place you work at (for one million dollars) can change the shape of the bow of a canoe I bought there? What I'd like to do is actually remove the front few feet off my Mckenzie and have it replaced with a shape more akin to the Prospector, this so it would ride up over big waves in surf instead of slice through them which causes it to take on water.

Monster, I fail to see what this has to do with the topic of this thread. To answer your question however, it would be better to contact Marlin about it.

I've heard that section of the Sumas River can get pretty disgusting at times. Not sure if I'd want to paddle in water like that (especially given that we've got plenty of cleaner options nearby) -- I suspect that the murky water is caused by drainage from farms? I've also heard that at certain times of the year it's not bad. How far did you paddle upstream? What time of year did you go? Was there anything interesting to see? Is it a good bird habitat?
