Project HikeFinder http://www.rwg.ca/092g/ email: tracklogs@rwg.ca
Imagine the possibilities Click on the map, and see a map of the southwestern corner of BC. 3 large areas areas are shown. By clicking on one of the areas, you are taken to a more detailed map showing hikes in the region. There are options to turn on/off trails based on the level of difficulty, length of trip, and pretty much any other variable. Clicking on a trail goes to another separate page with all the other database info, pics, trip reports, etc. One could click on the graphic of a camera on the map to find out the current location of the MPR camera and discover the GPS coordinates for Outdoorguy's house.
Digital Map Info The current (and only map) on the website is the NTS 92G Toporama series provided by Natural Resources Canada at http://toporama.cits.nrcan.gc.ca/ The MapServer software http://mapserver.gis.umn.edu/ is provided by the University of Minnesota.
The Toporama maps are GIFs put out by Natural Resources Canada under the following license http://toporama.cits.nrcan.gc.ca/En/entente_popup.html which allows for free use and copying of the data provided the copyright notice is included. The map is NTS, 92G sheet, at 250K scale. Maps are also available at the 50K scale so I plan to have clicking & drilling down the 250K scale would eventually bring you to the 50K scale map.
There are other digital maps out there. This page http://members.shaw.ca/davepatton/mapcompare.html shows comparisions between the different brands of digital maps. These maps have been scanned from paper NTS maps. (The Toporama maps are generated from NRC's vector data which is why it looks different).
Attention: A lot of the map companies do not put additional copy restrictions on their scanned map products. If anyone has such a CD for BC, I would love to borrow it so I can put the maps on the website.
There are other free maps available such as Landsat images that could be added.
Map and Trail Data The trails are not marked very well on the map. They're difficult to find on the computer screen and generally not marked at all.
Ergo, we need to make our own data. GPS data, waypoints, tracklogs. The maps are coordinated to latitude and longitude. (well, not yet actually, but will be).
GPS data, waypoints, tracklogs. We need CTers to contribute this data.

(con'td) I can't stress enough how important this is. GPS data, waypoints, tracklogs. We need CTers to contribute this data.
If you have this data, please email it to tracklogs@rwg.ca Database Other people have thought more about databases than I have. And have more experience too. There's plenty of work for me to do on the maps themselves. jhamlin - would it be possible to create a new forum under Site Specifics? It could be titled Development; and discussion about this project and other projects such as the database could take place in that forum. MapServer Mapserver is incredibly flexible. It can read raster or vector files and display them on the map. Layers can be turned on and off. Clickable items or pop-up tooltips can be displayed on the map. It can communicate with databases. There are a huge variety of maps available at http://mapserver.gis.umn.edu/gallery.html including the live map coverage of forest fires at http://atlas.gc.ca/site/english/maps/environment/forestfires/dailyhotspots2003
TO-DO * figure out how to leech maps from toporama * add 92J, 92H 250K maps * add 92X/X 50K maps (48 maps) * develop map interface * figure out how to integrate GPS data & add trails * add other maps (paper-scanned, landsat)
Edited to clean up formatting

0.0.2 Map-crazy - added 250K maps for sheet 92 (16 maps) - added 50K maps for 92G, 92H, 92J (48 maps) - added 50K orthographic maps for 92G, 92H, 92J (48 maps) - added reference map in upper right hand corner - added scale so that when drilling down 250K map, 50K map comes up automatically as needed

Hey that's looking pretty decent. One question I have is about the contour lines. How do you tell what they are at?

Good question. I'm guessing the contour intervals are 20m for the 50K maps and 100m for the 250K maps. As for the actual elevation, the toporama maps are not the best quality for that. If you know of anyone who has a maps cd, I could copy those maps.
You can see a comparison between the toporama map and the cd maps here: http://members.shaw.ca/davepatton/mapcompare.html

there are scads of GPS waypoints in Bivouac.com. You will want to contact Robin Tivy (site owner) about permissions to use the data from that site into your program, however
cheers !! C Wall
