Hi All,
Looking at preliminary planning for a 10 day backpack in summer 2008 into some off the beaten track country.
My topos suggest that a loop over Job Pass, and rambling through some high country between Job Lake, Samson Lake and Longview Lake in the Bighorn, west of Nordegg looks doable, intriguing and remote. However, I can find no information, trip reports or evidence of trails. Undecided whether to approach via Coral Creek, or the South Boundary Trail in Jasper.
Anyone explored up there or can share any information would be appreciated.

Caribou, I'll see what I can dig up for trail data in the White Goat. It's hard to find anything that's ne and up-to-date. Mapitfirst |

Thanks Mapitfirst,
Yes, the Whitegoat is similarly lacking in maps and info. I have been up and down Cataract Creek and over Cline and Cataract passes, and found suprisingly good trail.
The country a little further east intrigues me, but its a long way in before knowing what to expect.

I've got the trail data for the area. It may be old but as you said, these trails are often well defined. I wonder if there is a horse group in Rocky Mountain House you can contact to get some information as it is mostly horse traffic up there.
I'll get the maps up when I get home for you. The trail up Coral Creek looks long and enduring with little in the way of views. It maybe 40km's of looking at your feet as the valley looks tight with few breaks in the vegetation until you get to Job Pass. I've been up a portion of the Brazeau River and it does offer some nice views along the way. Route finding to Longview lakes looks challenging and a great adventure. Job Lake has a trail leading to it. You might be able to do a loop from Longview Lakes to Job Lake via Leah and Samson Lake. |

Here are a few map images. The trails in green are official Parks Canada Trails. The trails in red are from the federal gov't and are likely dated. It's such a large area, it's hard to creat a readable image. Let me know if you want a specific area zoomed in and I'll send it to you. |

Thanks Mapitfirst.
Yes, it looks like fine country, I will try and find some sheep hunters who know the country, as it does not look like many hikers get back up in there.
The maps look great. Something centred on the high country between Samson and Longview Lakes would be very useful
