If I could find a way to install a heated cabin on a Hellman Quetico I bet I could get some shots of bald eagles snatching snow geese right off the water right now.

Properly equiped , you should have no problem on the water. If the ice is more than 1/8" thick you may have to ride up on top of it and break through it like an icebreaker. A bit tippy at that point but enjoyable in the sunlight.

It's never too cold to paddle! Get a blue foamy or two, and line the bottom of your canoe with it/them. Wear more fleece. Wear sealskinz gloves, and fleece muffler. Keep a thermos of hot tea. And remember to hydrate - winter is a lot drier than the other seasons for some reason.

keep going out there and continue taking your wonderful photos !!!

I googled Northern Harrier and came up with this image...

which seems to have a much shorter tail, otherwise looks pretty spot on though.

Birding BC? (I'm a longtime a lurker )

The Northern Harrier is very common in that area. The thing about Northern Harriers is the color of their plumage ranges from male to female to juvenile, so they can look very different, but they all have that distinctive owl looking face. Keep looking through the Google image search and you will see other shots with the same longer looking tail as in your shot.

You were the one that pointed out Birding BC to me in the first place however I was referring to my canoe forum... I'd never pretend to know what I'm talking about on BBC, those guys are fanatics

Actually I've met a few of the crowd there while out shooting myself... a good bunch of people :)

Me too BG, because my longest reach is only 200mm. 300mm would get capture many more keepers I think.
