Hey all, I did Elfin Lakes on Friday. Gorgeous day! There were only 5 other cars in the parking lot when we arrived at 10:00 a.m. Minimal bugs, maximum sunshine. We tried heading to Opal Cones, but about 4.5 km from Elfin Lakes, the trail seemed to narrow. It went along the side of a cliff, and we decided it was too dangerous to continue. Has anyone gone to Opal Cone/Mamquam Lakes recently? Did anyone follow the route that said "Follow the arrows" (written on a large rock w/ white paint).. haha ya, I know.. it sounds sketchy. I wonder if we wandered off trail?

You were going the right way.The trail follows that cliff side or rather hugs it then widends out and drops down to Ring Creek.from there you cross the bridge and the trail switchbacks up the hillside.I think from the creek it's about 1hr.

When I found the skull in the woods I immediately called the police , but began to wonder : Who was this person and why did he have antlers ?

i was up at elfin lakes saturday, and the opal cone and mamquam lake on sunday. you were on the right trail--after ring creek, the signage for the first ridge up to opal cone is gone, but is very clear for the 2nd ridge (it is a circuit) and most people (myself included) were just going up the 2nd ridge. the trail is steep with loose rock, but it is totally worth it.

when i was up at the opal cone, clouds obscured the peak of diamond head, but yesterday as i was heading home, it was cloudless and breathtaking.

ok, i've finally got a minute to post some pix of my trip to elfin lakes on august 2-4. i hiked up to elfin lakes on august 2, and there were so many campers that the overflow area of the campsite was full. but it was a beautiful day for a hike.

the sunset was amazing... too bad this photo doesn't do it justice...

on sunday, i hiked up to the opal cone. the trip took about 2 1/2 hrs, and there were very few people on the trail. this is a photo of the trail to ring creek as well as the view of rampart ponds from the ridge leading up to the opal cone. the trail steep with loose rock so exercise caution when passing this area.

the clouds obscured the peak of diamond head that day, but it was still incredible.

then i was off to mamquam lake. the bridge over zigzag creek was still out, so in order to cross, off came the boots. the water level was a bit precarious carrying a pack, but thankfully i was able to keep balance with my pole. after zigzag creek, the trail narrowed and turned down through prime bear territory to mamquam lake.

the bugs were out in full force that night! on monday, i packed up and set out for the 22 km journey back to the trailhead. it was an incredible morning.

the trail was about 70% uphill to elfin lakes, and it was a HOT day. there was little a cloud in the sky, and diamond head was out in full glory.

it was a real trip to remember...

Sue; what great pictures.I was up there the same time last year and you are right about the sun sets. The other thing that stands out in my mind are the stars at night. It took a long time to fall asleep with a sky like that. Thanks for the super pictures.I sure hope we get some rain soon as I want very much to head back up there in September.

I was up there sunday, just up to the lakes! It was quite a maintained trail with a good number of people. When we got up to the lakes, a larger group showed up shortly after..

I had to remind them/let them know that only one lake is good for swimming.. (being of one of the gentleman there that hadn't seen the signs, which are different for each of the two lakes, jumped into the water) And the one he was swimming in was the drinking water only lake..

His group shouted to him rather quickly (realising that some of the only drinking water availible was from that little lake when you camp up there!)!... It was kind of funny..

Also, I found out that a girl I went to elementary school with is rangering(is that a real word or did i just make that up?) up there (for a few more months) from her family.. So heading up that was also a neat chance to pop a hello to her as well.. havent seen her since i was about 16!

I'm not lost.. I just prefer the scenic route!
