...not a "true" trip report because the most "hiking" we did was running along the shore after the guide brought us a shore so we could "play" the fish in... ...
...but nevertheless, look at these two fish my dad and I caught on the Fraser two days ago... ...

...too bad you can't keep them, we'd be eating sturgeon for a year! Or i could have hosted a massive CT BBQ at Buntzen with "all-you-can-eat-Sturgeon-Burgers". What did I use? Salmon eggs rapped in a piece of woman's stocking about the size of a golf ball on a very large and strong barbless hook...and about a hundred and forty pound test line...
...fun it was... |

This is sick but true, in ontario, in one area not too far from me at the time, farmers stopped giving out free kittens (limiting to just 1 per person), because fishermen were using them for bait for fishing Musky (Muskellunge).

| Hike in Van I believe that rules for sturgeon fishing on the fraser this year are the same as what young men practice in high school. Remember it is stickly catch and release. Ed |

The judge made me promise to stay away from young men in high schools, so I wouldn't know.
I thought I'd read that the catch and release fishery was closed this year, maybe for a certain part of the river.
I have to say, it is a fishery I am very much against; I don't think there are enough sturgeon in the Fraser, they are genetically unique, and there are so few of them left, that damage from hooks aren't worth the profits gained. My opinion only, I'm sure there are people who make their livelihood from this fishery that would disagree. I'm against it though. |

...apparently from the tagging program (the smaller fish had been caught twice before), there are more sturgeons in the river then they ever believed after the heavy fishing of the earlier years...
...as too the weight, the smaller was about 75-80 pounds and that large 8 footer was around 300 pounds... |

A great book to read is "Ghost in the Water" by Terry Glavin (I hope I came came close withb Title and Author)
Anyway it's a great treatment of the sturgeon in BC and what it meant to first nations and eauropeans. It's a nice blend of fact and musings on the spirit of these ancient fish.
The sturgeon is one tough fish. |
