I had been planning to scramble up Cypress Mountain on the weekend instead but no one I knew was able to come. I was a bit uncomfortable scrambling up the mountain by myself, especially considering the snow conditions, so I decided on hiking up to Garibaldi Lake and doing either Panorama Ridge or Mount Price, depending what time it was when I got there.
I got to the trailhead relatively early and managed to get on the trail shortly after 9:30. Having never been up there before I was surprised by how dry the forest seemed: reminded me a lot of hiking back home in the interior. Except the trees are about 5 times larger.
I got to the lake around 11am and took a 10 minute break to enjoy the beauty of the place.
My Objective

I managed to find the beginning of the trail to Mount Price without too much hassle, but I got turned around a couple times at the beginning by the multitude of trails. I finally managed to get away from the lake and from there the trail was self-explanatory. For a trail through the forest there were still some decent views at spots.
After about an hour from the lake I arrived at the foot of Clinker Peak.

I could have used a break by then but the mosquitoes chose that moment to come out and hound me. No rest for the wicked I suppose. I decided that I didn't want to summit Clinker Peak was well so I angled up and around the peak on the really loose scree until I got to the col. From there it was an easy couple of minutes to the top of Price. At the top I managed to get out a long sleeve shirt and a bandanna and I escaped the mosquitoes for a bit.

After about an hour on the summit I headed back down to the lake, only to discover after getting off the mountain that my hydration system was empty of water. I refilled with water from my Nalgene and then packed some snow into that but it didn't melt enough until I had got back down to the trailhead. Suffice it to say that I was pretty thirsty by then. Aside from that little misfortune, this has been the best hike so far this year. I would highly recommend it. |

Beautiful photos, I just hate when I run out of water. Hydration systems are wonderful but it's not always easy to tell how much water you have left. Sounds like you had a wonderful time. Happy trails, Lynn |

Nice dayhike summit achievement. How busy was the place - parking, trail and lake? You probably didn't go by the meadows.

Can you provide a bit more detail about the trail, particularly the part that turned you around a couple times? I've heard it's not a maintained trail so is it relatively easy to follow?
I'm planning on spending some time in the area in late August/early September, and Mount Price is one of my objectives.
Nice photos too, it's some awesome landscape over there. |

When I was up there I saw a sign that said the Garibaldi Lake campground was full but I didn't see too many people by the shoreline; maybe 20 people going up and coming back down.
For the most part the trail was well marked and easy to follow. I got turned around near the lake because there are quite a few trails that join up with the Mount Price trail. Just keep close to the lake until you get around a small bay and then the trail becomes more well defined and climbs steeply up a ridge. A couple of other places the flagging seemed to lead in two directions but as long as you stay on the ridge you'll be fine. I took 4.5h to get up and about 3.5 to get down.
Cheers
