I use a cold brew system at home which makes about two quarts of coffee concentrate at a time ( toddycafe.com , do a search for better prices). The system makes a very smooth (little acid), very good coffee and the strength is up to your taste or mood...more concentrate => stronger coffee. I generally mix 7 parts water to one part concentrate. The concentrate keeps very well in the refrigerator.
Needless to say, this makes for a convenient way to have coffee on the trail...just pack up the needed concentrate in a squeeze bottle (I like recycled contact lens solution bottles)...no need to boil water, just heat it to your preference. At an ounce or two per cup of coffee this method is a bit heavy. But on short trips the concentrate will have the weight advantage over presses, percolators, etc. I've used instant coffees and expresso and coffee bags on the trail but this concentrate system is the best trail coffee I've had. It is the same I drink at home.

Espresso, being the superior technique for cooking coffee beans, means that the best cup of java possible in the backcountry is to use a backcountry espresso makers. MEC and Valhalla carry the GSI Espresso Maker for about $30. The only downside to them is that the single shot espresso maker is a reasonable size and weight, but if you want to brew up a quad, you are going to be there fussing around with the machine for quite a while. If you've got the time, working the little machine can be a very pleasant way to spend an hour.

For good coffee on the trail I use one of the MSR Mug Mates. They are great. The Mud Coffee single serving bags are pretty good too but I find you really have to let them steep for a good 10 minutes or so for optimum strength.
