That's Babe as in runt of the litter (the little pig that became a sheep herder). Conway is barely part of the Cheam Range, but it does offer up some outstanding views of it's bigger and more popular siblings. Also, these views are of the lesser seen and more dramatic north faces.
Two years ago a bunch of CTers and myself did Conway. It was cloudy, didn't see much. I always planned to come back on a nice day to see what I missed. Seems I picked the hottest day in July (ever) according to some news sources.
I drive up to Jones Lake. The up hill part on the FSR is fine, but lots of potholes when the road levels out. Just after the lake I take a left spur for 2.5 km to end at a washout. From here Conway is visible.
Shouldering a light pack I head up the overgrown logging road. Here's a shot of Welch, The Still and the Stewart/Baby Munday area.
In under an hour I leave the road and head into the forest. The trail is pretty overgrown but easy enough to follow. There are many creeks crossing the trail including one that requires a short detour to get by.
Refreshing
Shortly after that the bush thins and the snow starts. Breaking out into the open I turn and start heading steeply up.
Route up on the right. Summit on the left.
I gain the ridge and turn left to make my way to the summit. Some minor scrambling at the end and I'm on top. Temperature in the shade (not much of that) is 28 degrees. Views are 360.

1. Goetz and Williams Peak. 2. Looking back down at Jones Lake. 3. Along the ridge to Foley and Welch. Lucky Four Mine area still mostly snow covered. I've wondered about ascending Foley from the glacier on it's left, but will probably try from Williamson Lake instead. 4. Most of the Cheam Range: Welch, Still, Baby Munday, Stewart, Lady Peak and Cheam. And some glaciers too. 5. Me on the summit of 1996m.
Me again with Ling Lake below.
Heading back along the ridge I came across this Ptarmigan. I'm not sure which type it is.

A zoom on Williams Peak with Redoubt rear right.
I had fun gliscading back down the steep snow slopes before heading back into the bush and forest.
Looking back at the summit from part way down the snow slopes.
By the time I hit the logging road I was starting to feel the heat. A swim in Jones Lake seemed like a good idea.
Conway from the logging road. Ascent line is basically left to right through bush/trees and up right side to ridge and then onto the peak at left.
Back at the vehicle I make haste and head for the lake. A refreshing dip and I'm heading homeward. Passing through Chilliwack the car outside temp gauge hit 40 degrees, though I heard their official high was around 37. Glad I took the day off work . |

AT, snow mostly covers creeks in the alpine, though there are a few open holes to avoid (you can hear the water too where snow covers it).
AcesHigh, when hiking solo I have too much time to think of weird titles and the like for my TRs .

| Imaginative destination. It sure was crazy hot in town yesterday. Hopefully the hottest day of the year. Kudos for getting a good hike in. |
