We spent the Canada Day long weekend exploring Murtle Lake in Wells Grey provincial park. Murtle Lake is the largest canoe only lake in North America and has around 100 km of shoreline with plenty of bays and lagoons. Fantastic fishing too. And let's not forget amazing sunsets.
There are two marked trails: Central Mountain and Wavy Ridge, each about 2-3 hours of paddling from the boat launch.
We did the Central Mountain hike on July 1. The trail is mostly cleared, there are about half a dozen falldowns, all fairly small and easily crossed. Small snow patches are still lingering on the summit plateau between the West and East summit.
Most people do this as a dayhike but I think and overnighter would be a fantastic trip. The views are amazing and watching sunrise and sunset from the top must be awesome. There is a small tarn between the two summits which does not show up on the map.

| Beautiful photos. The clarity in them are impressive. What kind of camera do you use? |

| Your beautiful pics bring back great memories from a trip we did several years back. We paddled the lake circuit and hiked the Wavey trail. Seeing your caption of outrunning the thunder storm was also very real for us. We got caught in high winds on the lake, plus later at camp anything not tied down (including our canoe) went for a major bounce down the beach. The mosquitoes were the worse I have ever encountered. Did you see any moose? We had nice sightings at tend of each lake arm. Murtle Lake is a nice lake to explore. |

Telkwa; Thank you for your compliment. I used Nikon D80, rather big and heavy for hiking but I did not mind bringing it on this trip. The pictures are saved in RAW format and "developed" in Lightroom.
DW2; No moose sighting for us, but some fellow campers at the Tropicana campground saw one just behind the camp. The mosquitoes were out in full force, the only unpleasant part of our trip. We actually did not outrun the storm and spent almost an hour in some pretty heavy rain, the wind was also quite high. I did not dare to take the camera out although the light was quite impressive during the storm. |

| Nikon D80 - that explains it. Heavy but worth it. |

Martin; The best time is August: no more mosquitoes, well maybe a few, but lots of people. September, with nice weather, is magical. The portage road is deluxe so you can bring lots of luxuries. |
