Happy Canada all!

One of the celebrations of the BCMC's 100th anniversary was a recreation of the first ascent of Mt. Garibaldi which was also 100 years ago. A favorite: westward looking shot of the Tantalus range.

PS It sucks climbing in wool clothing!

Anders Ourom posted a partial trip report on supertopo. He also posted a TR for the BCMC trip up Grouse using 'Bugs' for lighting. I like the period outfits and the bugs.

No but the leader carried the original ice axe J.J. Trorey used on the first ascent! That sucker is almost an alpenstock!

Those pictures from supertopo are so rad. Where'd you find all that heavy old gear?

To pull that off you'd have to thrash your boots and clothing, then borrow clothing from loggers on the way home

Mick, that's brilliant! I never thought to contact Ted or Denis!

Actually the wool clothing wasn't that bad. It was different and the performance features were unknown. That combined with the unsettled weather forecast added, how shall I phrase it(?), a sense of adventure? It tended to be too warm in the sun and not warm enough in the wind. For a jacket I used Harris Twead which isn't designed as an outdoor jacket.

Most people got their stuff at Value Village, Salvation Army stores, etc. although some pulled it out of their old wardrobes! The women had to make their bloomers of course! In addition many ace bandages were sacrificed in the search for the perfect puttee!

The climb was mostly a slog, with some steep snow. Route finding was pretty straight forward. The bergshrund was open but at the east end there was a solid ramp. Crevasses were nicely covered but there were a few legs that poked through! For some reason the first rope team was convinced they could cross the bergshrund at the top (which would have been the best route if you could cross) even though it was visibly open. In one of those strange strokes of fate the last rope team (there were 4) became the first and after the steep snow portion just beetled on up to the summit.

Atwell and Squamish:

Mt. Pitt beckoning:

I'm not going to do a TR since this was a very special BCMC event and I don't think it's appropriate. I'll be putting my photos on flickr later and I'll post the link.

Ed, this is the one and only time I'll show you my woolies!

I'm not so sure I follow the logic behind this - sounds to me like just the sort of thing TRs should be written about?
