To take advantage of some good weather in June 2007, we decided to head for the Southern Chilcotin Mountains. This time of year can be a great time to visit the low-mid elevation flowering meadows and the bug level is nil to low. And we wanted to clear out and reflag the Lower Tyaughton Hiker’s Trail as there were reports made last year which indicated the need for trail maintenance. This trail, which departs from the Bonanza Forest Service Road, leads about 4 km to the W to connect to the well known Tyaughton Creek Trail.

Near the trailhead we noticed that the balsamroot flowers, for which this area is well known, were just starting to flower. Seems as though the flowers are blooming late this year due to the late winter. Also, a great view of Mt. Sheba is offered right from the trailhead area.

As expected there were plenty of windfall across the trail from the winter wind storms. Along the trail we couldn’t help but notice a HUGE pile of bear scat displaying ‘coils’ of about 3 inch (7.5 cm) diameter. This means one big ass and thus, one big bear! We soon began making more noise along the trail after that.

We reflagged the trail, cleared it out and beat detours around the windfall where necessary. This trail has fallen into disrepair over the past few years due to declining horse traffic (i.e. the local outfitters are no longer maintaining it). For now, users should be able to find their way along this trail with little trouble although some of the windfall does pose a little inconvenience. For those who prefer to follow a better maintained trail, though longer with more elevation gain, the Tyaughton Ck Trail can be followed from its trailhead along the Mud Creek–Paradise Creek Forest Service Road.

As usual, the meadows and open forests were a pleasure with balsamroot, penstemon, larkspur, fairyslipper, lupine, arnica, and Jacobs ladder flowers along the way. This time of the year is also very good for butterflies and we spotted many species searching for flowers. As the trail rose up, great views of Eldorado Mtn and surrounding peaks rounded off a great trip.

Very nice! Great job to go out and maintain and re-open a trail like that. Nervous about the bear...wow! You guys are brave!
Butterflies and wildflowers? Man, I gotta get into the mountians!
Thanks!

Lee:

Sorry. Tried answering you last time you asked that, but I went to plug my cell phone in and hit the off switch on the power bar and killed my computer. Then forgot I was answering the question.

If you look at the WHOIS info, it is registered to Sandy Hart, who is out of Tatleyoko Lake, or at least was last I talked to him (the address on the form is different).

Another member of the group is Petrus up at Eagle's Nest Resort near Anahim Lake.

Both Sandy and Petrus helped immensely when I was doing research for the Chilcotin Book. They are locals looking to protect the environmental and recreational values of the area.

Anything else you need to know? Looking to get in contact, or just curious who they were?

Enjoyed the flower pics but really enjoyed your description of how you figured out the size of the bear

Those flowers are a snack for eyes, love the colours and delicate detail. When I hear of bears, I look for another direction away.

Thanks for sharing the beautiful photos and for doing the trail maintenance Claudia. I have not explored that particular trail. It's on the list now!
