I signed on to look for the Mercer Report!
gsandrock and I headed up Mt Thar today. Sunny in the morning. Thar peak from the Falls Lake parking lot.

And on the way up

View of Nak & Yak from the summit of Thar
view of Alpaca, Vicuna & Guanaco
Leaving the summit with a storm coming in...
and on the way down -- much faster than going up
we were down lower by the time the wind & rain reached us. Sunny again by the time we reached the car.
Took us 2:30 up and 1:08 down. A short steep hike. |

How much snow is there on the south side of Yak? |

| Never done Thar on snow but I it looks like fun. Did you use crampons or just boot kick in? |

Dru, I'm not a climber (looking at your Hozomeen report, you definitely are one). The Yak south rock face the climbers go up looked to be pretty bare -- note that this assessment comes from a non-climber driving by). The Yak hiking route alongside the rock face still had snow. Higher up on the east side of Thar there is still 5 - 6 feet of snow.
Simon, The snow was soft and well consolidated (no post holing!) so just boot kicked but did use ice axe. Different snow conditions and crampons would be recommended. We attempted Thar a couple of months ago with snowshoes on 8" of powder on top of frozen snow and bailed a couple of hundred feet below the summit as we got too far east near an avalanche bowl.

| Nice pics! Good area to access on a half day hike! Nak is an enjoyable, but exposed scramble from Thar. |

| Nice hike. I was across the road on Needle Peak and from that side, Yak looked pretty clear; I took a few shots of Yak. There was snow in the trees and less than 1m in most places. I postholed a few times but did not use snowshoes. In the open on the steep rock faces, the snow was gone. |

Hb -
Am I correct to assume you walked across Falls Lake ( as opposed to swimming or going around it) ??
Nice views . . .
This was my winter up in that area . . . I like it.

| I like Thar this time of year. I keep gazing upon it whistfully as I drive by to and from the interior. |

we took the Falls Lake exit and parked part way up the road to Falls Lake, then hiked up the pipeline to the crest of the hill, then into the bush and up up up. I took a picture of Falls Lake from the summit of Thar but I'm in Alberta now so cannot post it. I assure you Baddoc48 that we didn't walk on water
