When my birding friend John V called Monday night to inquire about my Tuesday plan I told him I was climbing a peak I hadn't climbed yet. Where? I hadn't decided yet I told him, but it was sure to be a long trailess bushwack somewhere. John discretely suggested combining a peak with birding. Since his plan had been to do a Manning Park day, I suggested Mt. Frosty. This was a comprimise(we had both hiked up it several times)... we could climb a very nice peak, and if back early enough, we could check out the beaver pond and several other varied habitats for birds. We managed to get about 35 birds...a pretty good day for Manning Park. My best bird of the day was the Boreal Chickadee. The bird which impressed us the most though was the Spruce Grouse which strutted around us displaying his plumage.

We didn't end up hiking to the peak but it was a good pipe opener and a good tester warmup for 2 guys with bad backs. The fact that our combined ages were 121 years might be of interest...there is hope for some of you! The snow was mostly quite good(no snowshoes). The larches of course looked dead, but will soon morph into the most beautiful trees. The day was warm, not hot.

This buttress on the higher West peak calls to be climbed. Looks doable...perhaps loose! |

Nice Grouse shots, they seem so much tamer at Manning Park. Happy trails, Lynn |

Great shots of a beautiful mountain, and superb bird shots. This was our target for Sunday, but poor weather forecast prompted us to do another hike.
Nice for you to get out there, and show some great pictures of a mountain I sure would like to take on.
Well done !

Very nice! Good to get out for test drive and burn the carbon out of the pipes... Nice to observe the birds... Great photos of a familiar friend the Spruce grouse...I can't believe that buttress hasn't been climbed yet |

| Dinner was really good! Was it chicken or grouse? In the birding vein, today I watched a peregrine falcon attacking vigorously, a turkey vulture that had blundered into the peregrines airspace near a nesting site. The peregrine gave pursuit. They twisted and turned in the air until a puff of feathers exploded from the vulture. The vulture wheeled away in a beeline seemingly unhurt! The falcon eased off, winged its' way back to the cliff. |

There are a few trip reports on this out there. I've been meaning to give it a try. Bivoac has one if I remember right. |

| Thanks for the update....we are heading up this weekend for an overnighter with the same group that went up Alouette with us. The reports for Alouette before us had great weather and we had rain...now it seems that those who have been to Frosty recently have had great weather and it looks like we are heading in to rain once more. Oh well, we will tough it out and report on the conditions. |

The snow was continous at about 300m above Lightening Lake. We basically lost the trail here, as it is not marked but if you have a rough idea or better a map you'll have no trouble. At the long level traverse in the forest (cabin) area the snow lies about 3-4 ft deep. On the next tier along the upper bench in the Tamarack forest it was about 3' deep sometimes less in wind scoured areas. There it was very firm.
Southern aspect of Skyline trail is pretty snow free...no one will be skiing that. Hopefully the rainshadow effect will prevail for you DW2. Wish you well. |
