I am looking at doing a circle tour of the northern half of the Icefields Parkway and the Forestry Trunk road, to take in some off the beaten track hikes into Ruby Lake, Rocky Pass, the Cardinal Divide and other front ranges country.

I can't find much information on the nature of the trunk road between Hinton and Nordegg. We have a Toyota Matrix. I'm comfortable driving on good gravel roads, but know that all gravel is not created equally, and 250 km of bone jarring trail isn't pretty.

My wife says I'm nuts and I can pay to have the suspension fixed after the trip.

Anyway, does anyone have a recent road condition report from Hinton -Cadomin (or Robb) south to Nordegg. I've heard conditions have improved considerably due to more industrial upgrading and traffic.

So, Trunk road by car, doable/advisable? Any other recommended accesses and stops along the route would be welcome

Thanks

That whole area is heavily used by oil and gas companies these days so the road is well maintained. It's definitely doable by car.

I did it in my Crown Victoria. It was fine. You can probably even average 60 - 70 km/h even in a car. Even faster in a truck, or a vehicle you didn't care about.

You should be fine but you will have to share the road with those inbred oil and gas rednecks.

The roads are similar in nature to those in that movie "The Hills Have Eyes".
