Mick Range and myself had some unfinished business in this area. A year and a half ago we got to Clinker Peak but not Price (many lame and not so lame excuses). This time I made it but not Mick as he was stuck working.

From the Rubble Creek parking lot I quickly ascend the Garibaldi Lake trail. Snow starts at around the 3km mark (1000m el. or so). It is very hard packed and icy early in the day. After about two hours I stop at Garibaldi Lake. Still well frozen. The cabins are nearly all buried.

Pausing for some food I enjoy the views and take this shot of where I'm heading.

Price, Clinker and no-name.

A zoom on the Black Tusk.

With snowshoes on now I stay near the lake shore, crossing a small bay and then head into sub alpine forest. No fresh tracks, no flagging and no problems encountered as the route is pretty straightforward. Mt. Price is in the SW BC Scrambles book.

Castle Towers through the trees.

Looking up to Price from the base of Clinker. My ascent route heads up the right side of the photo.

Westward view of Tricouni and Cypress Peak.

It's a straight and steep ascent up Clinker. Before the summit I veer off to the col and in short order I'm atop Mt. Price (2052m). It's a broad summit and I wander around for half an hour taking pictures and taking more pictures.

1. Me on the summit with Black Tusk behind.
2. The Table and Mt. Garibaldi.
3. Castle Towers, Carr to Sphinx with Guard in front.
4. Black Tusk and Panarama Ridge rising above Garibaldi Lake.
5. A look back at where I came from.

A closer look at The Table.

Over to Clinker Peak (1995m) I pause for a few more shots before heading back.

Price from Clinker.

Tantalus and Pelion with a small Zenith in between over the top of the un-named peak next to Clinker.

Looking down Clinker.

Looking up Clinker with Price at left.

Westward view.

Back at the lake/cabin area I grab a bite before heading back down the 9km lake trail to the vehicle.

Price and Clinker with my tracks just visible on Clinker.

Mt. Price is 28km round trip with an elevation gain of nearly 1500m.

How was the snow later in the day, reasonably good with snowshoes on, or post-holey and isothermal?

Dru, it was good with snowshoes. The trail to/from Garibaldi Lake was still hard packed.

Phenomenal pictures, Simon. I kind of think we will get net accumulation to the glaciers this year seeing how deep it is in your shots, and with it still being so cold up there.

Simon, when are you next going out? Then I will know when it's not going to rain.
Nice little walk you did. Did you use snowshoes before reaching the lake? When you say steep up Clinker, was is doable with just snowshoes - was an iceaxe or crampons needed?
Good pic of the area.

Wow, two hours to Garibaldi Lake, that's amazing! 28km in one day mountain hiking is also amazing. Loved your pictures and report.
Happy trails,

BH, crampons were not needed for Clinker, good snow conditions. The lake trail was more suited to crampons (instep would be good). Rarely used the iceaxe. I put the snowshoes on at Barrier Lake.

Aceshigh, I did have a jacket in my pack I think.

Great pictures Simon as always but dang when I saw this report I was kinda hoping you might have swung a little farther left with your camera and caught more of Clinker ridge running to SW and views of clinkers South slopes running down to table meadows and the foot of Warren Glacier. That's ok will be up there soon I hope.

edit
wait a minute I think this picture gives me what I want to see but not sure

Well done, youth, a belated birthday present for you to bag that one !
There are plenty of views you got that we missed the last time. Great set of photos, I guess this means I'm going to have to finish this one too !

I don't think I've ever seen such high altitude shots overseeing Garibaldi Lake so early in the year before.
BONUS! and thanks for bringing that back to us.

Excellent TR, Simon. I did this late last summer and know what a long hike it is. I was just thinking about Garibaldi the other day and wondering how it looks right now. Thanks for the photos.

Nice to see how Garibaldi looks in the winter. It is one of my favourite places. I was even thinking of doing a snowshoe there soon. Thanks for posting.
