WOW!!!!!
I'd really like to thank everyone who showed their support for the Elk mountain trail today. Over 180 people showed their support by showing up at the trailhead. I enjoyed the chats I had along the trail with many people.
Many hiked to the first lookout and many headed up to the Elk Summit, a few went beyond to ward Thurston.

Tim (Billygoat) you truly have done an awesome job with the website, and your interview with Global TV was extremely informative and well done. I look forward to seeing what they will air tonight. The information signs you set up on the trail were fantastic. I truly commend you for your efforts. Thank you!

We got a few breaks in the cloud at the top of Elk and the valley showed itself briefly.

I really enjoyed my hike of ELk today and I hope that we can continue to hike it in the furtue and enjoy the trees we see today.

A few of us headed to the Jolly Miller pub in Chilliwack for a some food and beverages afterwards. Ron (skyhawk) wore his Elk antlers and after we were asked what we had been up to the waitress (Holly) informed us that she had read about it in the paper, and the management supplied us with a free round of drinks. Thanks to the Jolly Miller, sounds like we have support well beyond the hiking community.

Thanks again to all those involved.
I know there are lots of pictures out there and look forward to them being posted.

A free round????? I wonder what I would get for my involvement. My original intention was to take a bunch of photos, but I got kinda wrapped up in talking to alot of people so I didn't end up with alot of time for that.
I had a nice conversation with Jack Carradice, a retired Chilliwack Forest District Manager who gave me a few additional insights into the area and the trail itself.
The 09:00 crowd about to start hiking. Global TV catching the action.
People signing in. We had 175 sign in, plus an additional 70 signatures for the petition.

OK, here are my contributions!

As far as the views went...there weren't any! To top it off, my batteries went dead - from the cold, I guess - and the spares weren't much better, so I have very few pictures:

(I will probably be pilfering some member-pics to add to my collection for this hike!)

It was nice to meet some more from this site, my hiking partners changed every few minutes on the way up, but on the way down I was in the company of Eryne, Saybe and JohnHZ...glad to have met you all!
Wally, I'll keep you in mind if I have the time to actually PLAN a hike...as I told you, most of my outings are pretty short notice!

Hopefully our efforts today do NOT go unnoticed. Maybe the next "Group Hike" could be to save Spoon Meadows?

Great job Shaggy and Billygoat! Some turn out! About 12 members of Valley Outdoor showed up and 7 of us pushed on to the cairn toward Thurston. Very icy in sections, lots of mist and snow falling during lunch, but a great day to be hiking up there. We were joined at the carin by Johnhz, Wildman, Karvitk, and a few young people.

walked up to Elk summit with hike-along (middle)

Johnhz with his cute dog

Now off to catch the news!

Happy Trails,

Superb turnout. A total of 13 of us made it to Thursto Cairn. Well done everyone. Looking for ward to the news.

My video on the camera turned out okay. Now I have 2 showings, one in the parking lot and the other at the first viewpoint, will try to post it once how I figured out to do it last time.

What a fun day and a great turnout! I just watched the news. Good job Billygoat!! I hope we have some influence.

It was not a day for quiet and solitude but a great day for socializing and getting some exercise while supporting a worthwhile cause.

I didn't take many pictures (Jimbo seemed to be doing a more than adequate job) but here are a few:

Keeners

Enticing the whiskyjacks (and, a brief break in the clouds)

Free beer (which I did nothing to earn except to show up, but I accepted anyway)

Trek was aquired from the Chilliwack dog pound after having been in dog rescue. According to them he is a golden retriever cross, crossed with what is unknown. Thanks for the interest. Were you the son and father I was speaking with at the rally?

Great turnout today!

As mentioned earlier, Tim and Jenn did a bang-up job of coordinating things today! Thanks guys! And thanks too to Simon for getting the media in on things and for posting the sign-up on ct. A very fitting cause for Earth Day.
