I must confess - as a former Hope-ite I've only really snowshoed in the Coquihalla, Manning Park, and Chilliwack (when possible) areas.

I'd really like to get out and try something closer to Vancouver or Squamish, but I have absolutely no clue what is out there aside from Seymour and a few crappy "pay to snowshoe at the skihill" type places.

What are the best places for mid-length excursions? We've been up Zoa, Needle Ridge, Elk, etc - we're not up for major mountaineering but we'd like to do something other than a flat trudge.

Cypress, Seymour, and Grouse have summer hikes behind the ski areas - are there backcountry snowshoe routes as well? I imagine there's always Elfin Lakes - anything else worth checking out?

The really popular areas with marked trails are:
*Red Heather (Garibaldi Park)
*Hollyburn Mountain (not in XC area, it's free)
*Mount Seymour (trail to the summit area is free, only have to pay for snowshoe trails within ski the area)

Moderately popular area that are also summer hiking trails but don't have the snow wand route markers:
*Garibaldi Lake (also in Garibaldi Park)
*Rainbow - Madely trail (Whistler side)
*Howe sound crest trail? - not sure about this one since I've never tried going there, but I hear about people snowshoeing it all the time.

I did the Howe Sound Crest to St. Marks a few weeks ago, very nice, both the weather forecast and avalanche risk were posted at the trailhead.

Lots that I'm aware of north of Squamish - I'd be happy to go out with you sometime SC - just shoot me an email. Before Squamish, there's Deeks, Harvey, Lions etc.

For summer pick up a copy of the scrambles guide - lots of good info in there.
