An Inconvenient Truth

Event on at the Ridge tonight at 6:45. There will be a panel discussion on global warming from local public servant types, a half hour question period, a break for refreshments, and then the movie.

I was at the forum and the movie. It was very impactful.

I had ony seen snippets of the movie on talk shows but seeing "An Inconvenient Truth" in its entirety blew me away.

I highly suggest everyone to see this (especially the doubters.) They rent ths videos in most places and Videomatica is renting this especially cheap ($3.)

Granted, Al Gore added a bit of personal drama and emotional editing but the core of the message is still clear.

Things mentioned in the movie:

1. Diseases that were isolated in the sounthern (more warmer climate) are approaching north, such as Lyme disease, SARS, etc. Also, diseases that were thought to be wiped out are reappearing (eg, Legionnaires disease.)

2. China is less of an offender when it comes to auto emmission regulation. USA is much worse as they produce less hybrid autos than any other country.

3. Earth has cycles of ice melts and freezing but not at the accelerated level of this industrialized era.

There are many more stats, graphs and info that needs to be heard and seen. I plan to rent this video and have a night with friends and coworkers.

Absolutely it is a good movie, what is great is the fact Gore shows Numbers / Statistics, this is a real eye opener.

Some may bash the fact that Gore is driving around in his limo while travelling, but in all his movie and information is worth the pollution he creates driving around in his limo.

I was also at the Ridge on Monday night. I thought the movie was very, very good. And yes I do have a critical mind, so I don't just blindly believe everything I'm told or read or see in a movie. This movie was very compelling.

Thought the above was an interesting topic about the movie.

I heard a rumor about Gores speach on the oscars, he was about to announce his running, but they blurped it out with loud music?

Anyone else hear this / see this?

It was extremely funny. He tried to do it twice, I'm glad he has a good sense of humour about it.

It was pre-planned and funny. Nice to see humour and genuine concern for the environment.

The movie should arrive via Netflix to me tomorrow. I'll watch it and tell you what I thought.

In his documentary, the former Vice President calls on Americans to conserve energy by reducing electricity consumption at home.

The average household in America consumes 10,656 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, according to the Department of Energy. In 2006, Gore devoured nearly 221,000 kWh — more than 20 times the national average.

An smear without attribution from a conservative organization. Oooo how surprising!

Until I see something other than a press release on some conservative website, I don't see this "news" "article" as speaking to anything.

I wonder how much energy the Bush ranch is wasting every year, in Crawford, TX

I hear that Gore's mansion is being renovated with energy efficient things such as solar panels, etc. I guess because it's such a huge place, it takes time to install. How convenient that the conservatives chose to ignore this.

That's the way these things work. If you can't find ways to sow enough doubt on the topics he discusses, then attack the man himself.

Regardless of motives and methods for the news release, a point that I think is valid is that just because you can afford to live large, i.e. big house, big car, and lots of toys, .. Doesn’t mean that it is environmentally sound to do so, nor ethical from a social justice standpoint i.e. when people are still dying of starvation.

So if you want to preach environmental responsibility you should lead by example.

Maybe true, fmalmberg, hopefully he can do more leading by example. I agree it's somewhat oxymoronic to practice conservation in a mansion. But at least he's trying. And I congratulate him for the passion of his stand, and now for the Oscar recognition.

What burns me is how Gore gets blasted for contributing to GW with all his travels etc. He's "spending a dime to save a dollar", but the critics are focussing on the spending of the dime (in this case fossil energy) instead of the saving of the dollar (the planet)!

But hey, there's no other alternative. In order to get his message out he must travel the world--can't do it from home. And unlike electic buses or hybrid cars or whatnot, there are no clean energy aircraft out there for him to fly, so he's gotta fly regular jets and burn some kerosene.

This is entertainment, this is fun.

...is it possible that George Bush is a secret Green? Evidently his Crawford Winter White House has 25,000 gallons of rainwater storage, gray water collection from sinks and showers for irrigation, passive solar, geothermal heating and cooling.

The cynic in me thinks that it is more likely he is an apocalyptic; You gotta prepare for the end times! Someone should check if he's got a big stockpile of ammunition in the basement for warding off marauders. ;)

Clearing a Few Things Up for Al Gore

For all the good he's done for the environment—which, to be fair, is an awful lot—Al’s leaving out a huge piece of the puzzle by ignoring the fact that the devastation caused by the meat industry is among the worst environmental disasters ever to happen to the world. As we told him in our letter, sent earlier this week:

While the steps that you urge people to take in An Inconvenient Truth are inarguably important, the quickest and most effective way to fight climate change will come through diet change.

An inconvenient truth for him, maybe, but it’s the truth nonetheless. Since he might not have seen the recent U.N. reports on the subject, we pointed out to him that animals raised for food generate more greenhouse gases than all cars and trucks combined, and that (according to a recent University of Chicago study), switching to a vegan diet is more effective in countering global warming than switching from a standard American car to a Prius. We've also offered to cook him some faux "fried chicken" as an introduction to meat-free meals, since, however many documentaries you make, you just can't be a meat-eating environmentalist. I'll let you know if he gets back to us.
