There is development proposed for Fish Lake in the South Chilcotin. this was profiled in the Van sun in Dec06

Mining.... this lake is near Chilko Lake and just north of Big Creek Provincial Park.

The company wants to nuke the lake completely for tailings .... I finished off a traverse from the Goldbridge Area here and could not believe how many fish were jumping it has something like 85000 trout with almost 5000 caught annually... Has any one been here or in the area
its an excellent area for adventure nearby Yohetta has amazing hiking. This area is going to require the support of a lot of people for saving this pristine area....its precedent setting too the company wants to actually destroy a lake for ecomomic gain....

The Yohetta valley is just east of Chilko Lake and has great hiking takes 11 hours from Vancouver ....accessed from Williams Lake to Hanceville on Hwy 2o west then a 100 k toward Chilko Lake Ts'ylos Prov Park turn left about 10k at elkin creek after xing the
Taseko River Davidson Bridge (access here to fish Lake 10ks south)

Drive the elkin road south for 15 or so kms and enter the Taseko Lakes Valley in a further 10 kms the yohetta turn off is on the right...you can camp at Fishem Lake or Tsucha Lake let me know if you want any more info got some photos on my blog site....This wilderness area is amazing and needs protection..go there...

I have to question the quality of the information, and I hope it's wrong. I know of this project, the tailings design that I read about was planned uphill from the main mine pit, specifically to avoid the problem of polluting the lake or river. The plan was that if the tailings dam ever failed, the tailings would drain back into the pit, not the lake or the river. I would hate to see that lake filled.
I'm not saying that I'm for the mine, but that road you're talking about... guess why it's there.

With a bit of research I found something

Unfortunate. However, they are not filling the lake with tailings as "nuke" might suggest. They are planning to put the tailings in the valley above the lake, putting the lake at risk but not dumping into it. Chances are this will cut off the major source of water to the lake, altering it for the worse in the long run. Same difference I suppose.

Ah, mine tailings, the gift that never, ever stops giving. The Yukon has a few legacy gifts that government and the tax payer is stuck dealing with.

beautiful area. I think the Xeni Gwet'in first nation have a claim in the area and may want to stop this one.
