Depends on the hike,no one is gonna carry a 60 litre pack equipped with all the "what if's" on a wander to Norvan falls etc. choose appropiate terrain.Go with a buddy and/or have a contact that knows where and when you are/expect you back.Stay on trail,unless you are confident with navigation in wintery conditions.Try to stay dry and carry some basics,icluding a headlamp. A whistle is a great idea,FRS radio is also good,along with a map of the area. |

Carrying a rope and all that other crap as minimum gear is just silly. If you are just starting out with winter hiking you'd have to be a totaly gumby to get yourself into the type of terrain where you would need these. Harness and rope and biners ect ect is not hiking gear.
