Some feedback on using an iPod as a digital wallet:
I've tried this before and cound it to be a complete waste of time in the backcountry, because uploading photos to an iPod flattens it's battery in no time at all. Normally a hard-drive based iPod intermittently uses its hard drive when playing music - uploading photos turns the hard-drive on full, and the wimpy battery can't handle it. With my 3rd gen iPod, I only get about 45 minutes of upload time, and the battery is shot.
That said, the process actually *does* work when you are near the power grid, and it's a lot lighter that carrying around a laptop..

| Slightly OT but Beersnob, I'm curious to know what sort of battery play you get between charges on your 3G with just playing music? I get about 9 hours straight when it's supposed to be 14 on my 5G. I see there is an Apple iPod place on Broadway near MEC which will change batteries...no more sending the things away. |

It's about 8-9 hours play time, but that seems to depend on whether or not the music being played is Iron Maiden or Neil Diamond .
From what I recall reading, the 3G, 4G and 5G have identical batteries, but the newer models have better power management, which is probably marketing speak for "there's no !@#$%ing difference at all but by a new one anyway because it's 'better'".
One thing I forgot to mention regarding the digital wallet stuff, is that even if you are on-grid, there's no way that I know of to have one of these camera adapters as well as an A/C adapter connected at the same time, so you still have to wait for a stupid multi-hour recharge cycle after you've uploaded 2Gb of photos.. |
